not sure if this is possible or if anyone has tried it. is it possible to add d-rings to a stock 2nd gen tacoma and have them actually be functional? i bought one for the front and a mount from a member on the forum, is there anyway to add them to the rear bumper without having to upgrade to an all metal bumper?

You could make D-ring recovery points mount to the rear, just make sure they bolt through the bumper to the frame or get a receiver mounted D-ring from Harbor Freight or one of the vendors on here.

are you talking about shackles or d-rings? d-rings go inside the bed, shackles go on bumpers and rec hitches usually.

i was thinking of mounting them to the bumper itself, i was just worried the first time i go to use them, it would bend the bumper all up from the force of pulling etc..

The bumper itselt won't withstand a recovery. You'd have to brace it back to the frame of get a hitch mount shackle.

You can add one easily enough. I put a Hidden Hitch Class III on mine but there are lots of brands available, or pick up a used factory receiver for sale on here. Mine took about 30 minutes to install in a parking lot on my back. Then you could get the hitch mounted D-ring. If you plan on frequent hard recoveries, I'd look for a factory receiver. They seem to be a lot beefier than the aftermarket versions.

For the front, I am making a simular attachment point like the one on our truck's passenger side that a shackle can mount to when needed.
