Offset Hawse Fairlead

Hello All,

I purchased an ARB bumper for my 09 Taco this weekend, as well as a Smittybilt XRC 10 Comp winch. I mated the winch to the bumper last night and realized I will need an offset fairlead as this bumper reaquires a foot forward mount for the winch, and the holes are for a roller fairlead.

Does anyone have a good source for an aluminum offset fairlead?

 

slee off road i'm checked into this today sorry for the thread revival. but i'm looking at getting a smitty built XRC8 with synthetic line but i was told by arb and others that it will contact the bumper if pulled from different angles hence the need for the offset hawse style fairlead.

I just got a synthetic line and a regular hawse fairlead, went to replace the roller fairlead only to find out the dang arb bumper doesn't work with a regular hawse! If only I had discovered this thread earlier...

So the cheapest I could find for an offset one was slee offroad, for like $50. I could get Daystar polyurethane replacement rollers for my current roller fairlead from Amazon for like $40, but is that worth it?

Thread revival again.

I am going to replace my steel wire rope with synthetic, and I will need to replace my fairlead roller as it has some burs in it from the wire rope.

But I'm not sure I should go with a hawse style fairlead, or go with new rollers for the synthetic rope. The ARB is not really designed for a hawse style, and I worry the winchline might rub on the sharp corners of the bumper. Anyone have any advice on this?

I'm no winch expert-But I think if you are bending winch pulls off at angles that'll rub on the bumper-You need to think more about your rigging for pulls than about the fair lead.

 

I have the daystar rollers. They seem to be fine...I haven't actually done a pull with them yet, but my steel rollers were torn up by the steel line, so there was no way I was using those.

The ARB bumper has a little hole that the line comes out of and the bolts for the winch sandwich the bumper between the fairlead and the winch around that hole. If you have a normal hawse fairlead, you have to bolt it to the holes used for the winch, which are too low because that hole in the bumper doesn't come down far enough. The edge of that hole in the bumper comes about 3/4 of the way up the opening of the normal hawse, which would cause the rope to rub on the edge of that hole.

jsmarine, you definitely need either an offset hawse or synthetic rollers. It's really up to you, they'll both work fine from what I understand. I just went with the rollers because the offset hawse was $10 more expensive and I could get the rollers sooner. Plus it looks better with my ARB (which has a little projection in the bumper to cover the top of the rollers).

 

Here's a pic of my fairlead from a different thread. The large bolt on the fairlead is the bolt that holds the winch to the bumper. You can see that it's lower than the centered, factory-drilled hole on the fairlead. The hole in the bumper that allows the rope through still lines up with the fairlead hole, but only with that lower bolt. I think that's a bit clearer.

Of course, this isn't a tacoma, so it might be different.

Here is a pic of how my bumper looks currently with the steel rollers. I just dont think a hawse style will work being reccesed back into the bumper like that.


The arrows point to the area Im concerned about the synthetic rope rubbing if I had a hawse style fairlead.

 

Oh wow, that's really recessed back in there! Yeah, I would definitely go with rollers.
You also might have a problem with your license plate there if you do a pull. Just something to consider.
