Wiring expert help with led sider markers

I am trying to install three 3/4" led side markers. I want to wire them to a switch and not the turning signals. Will this require a relay?

What is the amp draw? If switch is rated enough should be fine... what are you going to use them for?

I use relays for everything... lol

So only two red lights in the front? Or did you buy two sets?

 

No, I am doing three white ones. I bought them from led warehouse.

 

3 leds should be fine in one switch. If you want to protect the dwight use a relay. Not much more work at all.

Where is a good place to get a relay online? Is there a certain type?

A 4 pole will work most are 5 pole and you use only 4 poles...

Not really a "4-pole".... the contacts only have one pole.
You have a N/O (87), common (30), and some have a N/C (87a)

The relays are 4 or 5 PIN. Pins 85 and 86 are the coil terminals that switch the relay.

Pin 87 is usually used as the output.
Personally, I prefer to reverse 87 and 30 for safety reasons IF I'm using a 5-pin. Why? 87a is the NC contact. When the relay is not energized (switch off, truck off), 87a is hot... direct connection to the battery.

This doesn't matter on the 4-pin, and really, it's not a big deal on the 5-pin as long as you put some shrink tubing over 87a.

There are some good uses for the 5-pin relay, example, you can use the 87a output to feed a 2nd relay to automatically switch between fogs and driving lights when you switch from low to high beam.

 

I gotcha. So a 5 pin can be used with a on/off/on 3 position switch?

 

That's actually a 2-position switch with an indicator light.
The ground connection is the ground for the indicator.

Switch pulls in the relay that connects the battery to the rest of the system.
The switch gets it's power from the parking lights, so when the headlights are off, the whole system goes dark.

Power normally flows from the 1st relay 87 to the 2nd relay pin 30, and out pin 87a to the fog lights.
When the high beams are turned on, the hot from the high beams closes relay #2, which redirects the output of relay #1 to pin 87, to the driving lights.
