Can I replace the steering wheel with aftermarket

And still maintain the airbag, cruise control, blinker stalk and wiper stalk?

I love the looks of the classic Grant steering wheels (black) but have no clue how to go about such a mod

 

I reallllly doubt the airbag portion. And if you could Im sure it wouldnt be worth what it would probably cost.

 

Well, doubt anyone in the entire country has done so (exactly as you describe). Thus, if you do the mod, your truck will definately be one-of-a-kind, unique, different, singular, unusual, strange...

 

even if you could, I wouldn't want to touch the airbag related stuff. I'd be too afraid of setting it off, or screwing up so it won't work.

Grant make airbag equipped wheels, but I think they are all for GM. One day maybe, one day.

Agree, stock wheel looks better.

 

Selling it was the worst decision of my life (automotively speaking)

But I had to do what I had to do at the time. I'll get one back eventually.

Alcantara I believe is the stuff used on most tuner/aftermarket steering wheels so maybe a cover outta that would give close to the feel you're looking for?

Wheelskins are a nice low-buck option. But, for a really nicely done steering wheel that would get you what you are looking for in aftermarket quality I would go with something like these guys

These guys will add thickness to the grip, and color match your wheel in alcantara so it looks relatively stock, but feels much nicer and looks cooler.

How does the process work? Obviously I can't send them my steering wheel.

I'm also afraid to see how much that costs.

 

I know plenty of people who have used them for vintage Porsche's. They almost always have the wheel done within a day.

And yes, you send them your wheel and they send it back. It is not as expensive as you would think. If you had a pre-airbag wheel, and went with a MOMO...the hub and wheel would set you back an easy $250.

I seem to remember these guys are around $400 for a wheel recover?

Just in case you change your mind and want to 86 the airbag...

I changed to a grant with no airbag, because I didn't want it going off accidentally while off roading. I figure, not only will that suck, it could kill me. All and all I built mine so I can off road it hard, which might not be your thing, but if you decide to go without all the other stuff....you will need an adapter for a 90s pickup (after research and talking to Grant found out they don't make one specific because of the airbag and laws) and a 2" spacer. I also got grants cheap puller, but had to re-drill 2 hole in it to work for my 2001 steering wheel. When I changed the wheel I also 86ed the cruise control and the wire coil that goes around the column (behind the steering wheel). It was broken anyways from whoever installed the lift.

To keep the airbag light off...all you need to do it unhook all the yellow wiring harnesses from the Airbag compter that is located under/behind the cigaret/aux power plug (lower center dash).

In a different write up I saw he cut the adapter all up. All I did was take off the copper ring.
