When I still had my stock Dunlops I would pull 27-28 MPG going 75+ MPH. I'm probably around 24-25 MPG at that speed now with my larger tires.

picked up roughly a half mile to almost a full mpg by eliminating the secondary air filter. I use a K&N, might try the stock paper filter as a test

Mine is pretty much the same.
I think Toyota builds in about a 5% cushion to their MPH readings.
It doesn't seem to exist on the odometer, so I think it is on purpose (probably lawyer reasons).

so we're going less miles than our odometer reads which means we're getting less fuel mileage than what we calculate at the pumps

    Speedo is about 5mph fast.
Odometer is within 3/10 over 100 miles compared to both GPS and mile markers. I'm happy with 0.3% accuracy ;)

Odometer is what matters for MPG calculation. Even though the same signal drives both, the calibration is not always the same.
Federal law allows for the speedometer to be as much as 10% fast. European law has harsh penalties if a speedometer reads slower than actual.
OTOH, Honda got spanked hard by the civil courts for having odometers that read fast. Ended up having to provide free extended warranties to the class members.

What is it with the 5 lugs and fast speedo reading? We have two 09's at work that are both 4-5 MPH fast at highway speeds. My 06 4x4 is only about 2MPH fast. That's close enough that I don't try to compensate for it. I drive with the needle on 70 most of the time. When I go to work I have to get used to driving 74 instead.

    Stock tires are 215/70-15

6 lugs come with larger AT tires (okay, Toyota calls them AT). They have a thicker tread, so there's more difference in tire diameter as they wear.

I suspect that a 6-lug with worn tires would have an error comparable to a 5-lug... though the odometer error would be greater.

Interesting. We have 215/75R15s in an LT load range C on the work trucks. Still have the fast speedo with brand new tires. Maybe it used to be worse? I don't know, the original tires and the guy who wore them out are long gone.

215/75-15 and the speedo is still "that" fast?
Going to the 75 in the same style tire as stock should be about a 2mph difference at 70.

There is a highway sign with a radar speed readout on it that I use to check it. The 5 lug reads 70 MPH on the radar with the speedo on 74. The 6 lug shows 68 on the sign with the speedo on 70.

    Maybe I should get me a GPS.:D

Good for comparison, but those highway radar signs are neither calibrated nor accurate.
