Doug Thorley headers AND Y-pipe???

I know I want the headers but should I get the Y-pipes as well with my Flowmaster exhaust???

 

Flowmasters don't sound good on our trucks stock, and will sound even worse with headers, and very bad with the y-pipe also. Has a very tin can sound to it.

 

Really because I have a flowmaster 40 series and I think it sounds awesome. I guess its your own personal preference

Just how much louder are we talking about? I use my taco 80% of the time commuting, I don't want to be obnoxious...

 

So I called the guys at Doug Thorley and they said with the flowmaster these headers will make my truck REALLY loud. They did mention, however, that if I had headers and, say, TRD exhaust it would be quieter than what I currently have. And if I got the Y-pipe as well it would be just as loud or maybe a little bit louder than just flowmaster exhaust.

Anyone in the market for some flowmaster exhaust???

 

My best advice to you would be to sell the Flowmaster on Craigslist, eat your losses and upgrade to a Dynamax exaust. Supposedly the Dynamax is the best exhaust for the configuration you speak of. If you speak to Gadget from URD, he'll tell you that the only set up to tame the "Raspyness" of that configuration, is the Dynamax. Gadget is well respected in this forum and his opinion holds a lot of clout.

 

I would appreciate the help, actually. I definitely want power but not at the expense of a comfortable ride. I'm ok with being a little louder but I don't want to be obnoxious about it. I want the sound to be a result of the power.

 

I don't think I like the idea of having anything raspy on my truck, although I'm not exactly sure what that might sound like. Like I said, if its not crazy loud and the sound comes from the power then i'll be happy.

 

are there not aftermarket resnators or something?

Certainly, but after you go LTs and a Y-pipe, the only question is how many cans do you have to attach to tame the rasp/noise to an acceptable level.

 

You are not wrong. Do you think Dynomax with Doug Thorley headers and Y-pipe fits my goals of power without being obnoxious?

 

TRD exhaust sounds good with headers and y-pipe. A friend of mine has that setup on his xrunner. Magnaflow is another good choice and what I'm running. My setup is trd s/c, dt headers, stock y-pipe and full 3" from the y-pipe back with a 5x11x22 muffler. Has a nice deep tone to it I orginally had a 5x8x18, but was to loud/raspy.

What you should do is just get headers first. Get a new muffler. Remember the bigger muffler the better. Then you can see if you would want it louder with the addition of a y-pipe.

 

Which headers and "Y" pipe are you going with? If it's the long tubes and the competition "Y" pipe by URD, I would do as much research as you can before you buy another exhaust you're not happy with. I've done A LOT of research for this particular configuration, and everything that I've seen and been told thus far, is to go with the Dmax exhaust. From what I have been told, it holds a mellow yet very clean throaty rumbled up to about 2,500RPM. Once you pass 3,000RPM is when it's starts getting a lot louder, but, it still holds a clean throaty rumble. I will soon be adding this setup to my truck and will be posting a video once I do. Hopefully this helps.

 

You might seriously consider just doing this one step at a time. Exhaust note (noise/rasp/drone) is very subjective. What is OK to one person is obnoxious to another. Given that, asking for comments on sound quality and quantity is a bit of a no-win situation for you.

I didn't see whether you have the stock cat-back still or not, but I would consider attaching a stock catback, either yours or acquired, then add the LTs in by themselves, drive it a while and see what you think, then add the Y-pipe and test the same way. After you have both of those, like 'em, and want more sound, add a catback, or cut in a muffler. I'd leave the catback/muffler until last such that you can tune the sound with the components you have and like and will keep. At the last stage you are really only tuning for sound since a muffler/catback are only going to give you a few ponies at the upper end of the rpm range.

 

I do but don't take my word for it. Call some local exhaust/performance shops on what they think. Call Doug Thorley to see what they recommend. The one person that you need to get a hold of is Gadget from URDUSA.COM. He'll tell you straight up. He's a very busy guy though so you might have trouble getting a hold of him.
