That is not always a good thing, competition is a good thing. With little or not competition Toyota could let the Tacoma go by the wayside with little or no attention to future gens. Just something to think about.

Frontier is still a decent competitor. The Colorado, well, you said it best

I think that the big point everybody is missing is that the compact/mid market is *not* drying up. Its drying up for the American car makers. There is currently, and will remain, quite a demand for something that is a truck, but not a scow.

Personally, my purchasing decision was specifically to purchase the absolute smallest 4 wheel drive pickup available. I didnt even test drive one before ordering mine brand new, purely purchased on spec. Nissan didnt offer a 4cyl 4x4, only Toyota, therefore Toyota got my money. If Tacoma gets bigger and/or loses the 4cyl, then my next vehicle will probably be an imported Kei truck. Mileage rocks on those things, and they are pretty cheap.

In fact, I'm thinking of doing that next anyway.

    I just checked Nissan's website and I didn't see a V8 option, just a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder.

And Dodge doesn't make the Dakota any more. No more Ranger either.

Cool, I just built a 2011 Ranger on the Ford website. At least they let you pick the gear ratio/differential type.

No V8 in the frontier and nothing in sight. they are redesigning in 2013 for 2014, but it's not getting a V8, they are smarter than that...

and I know this from working at Nissan.

You are reading the data wrong.

20 and 30 years ago compact trucks where all the rage. Dakota, Ranger, S10, Sonoma, Toyota, Nissan, B2000 ect. Sales have been declining in the last 10 years and Toyota knew this, that is why the Tacoma grew so much for 2005. It's bigger than F150's of yesterday and as large as a 1st Gen Tundra.

I would argue consumer interest have shifted from small trucks to larger ones. The 1st Gen Tacoma still lagged behind the Ranger in sales, it was not till the Tacoma grew that it's popularity grew with it to succeed the Ranger.

The Tacoma outsells Rangers and Colorados not because it's the "Best Small Truck" but because it's the "Biggest" small truck.

right, but now look at those trucks, they are still bigger than the Tacoma.
They grew before the tacoma did, keeping the tacoma smaller than them, if they grew even bigger, perhaps the tacoma would grow as well, but they haven't.

Toyota has a full size truck, there would be no logical reason for them to make their midsize truck, that is dominating it's market, into a full size truck, that would put it up against an F150, nobody wants to go against an F150 in sales.

They sell more Tacoma's than Tundra's, and what is the main buying motive for the general public now a days? and the first question people ask their salesperson? "what's the gas mileage like on this?"

Note Ford, best selling vehicle in the USA for 24 years, and best selling truck for 34 years, they just gave that truck a V6......................................

The Tacoma already tows 6500 pounds. That weight, I wager, is about the most our trucks can handle when you consider brakes, suspension and chassis.

It is right? That means if you drop a V8 in the Tacoma, it'll be rated to tow at least 10k lbs.

Apparently your sarcasm meter is broken...

I'm not quite that ignorant. I'm well aware that there is a lot more to GVWR and GCVWR than just the engine size.
