generally speaking, components have the potential to sound better given they are properly installed. the downside to components is having to mount two speakers instead of one, and having to put your crossover somewhere.

coaxials can also sound good if properly installed, but are limited on tuning/staging capabilities. generally speaking, they are easier to install.

Well put. I don't have anything to add other than; go take a listen and decide what speakers you like.

I talked to a sound guy just today about this. He said if properly powered a component will sound better. So if you're planning on installing an amp, go for the component. If not, a 3 way will sound better with the factory HU.

He also said that having 6x9s up front is very good for sound no matter the setup, so if you do go component opt for a harder to find 6x9 component system.

matter of opinion, if he is going to have a subwoofer, i would go with 6.5"s or 5.25"s

not 100% sure on the speaker size in an 04, but i think they are something weird like a 6x8 or something...

With no sub you'll want to stay with 6x9s (if that's what's in there) for sure b/c they give you more bass than 6.5s.

Shoot Mr. Marv an email. He's had extensive experience with Tacoma systems. He may be able to make an adapter to fit 6x9, if they'll fit behind the door panel. He even has his own forum here
