Dealership wants one hour labor($107) to program four TPMS sensors....ripoff?

does it take one hour to program these things?????? sounds fishy.....any opinions?

 

It takes me literally 5 minutes to do that at work.

 

I googled figuring someone probably had figured out a way around the stealership. Apprently not they are serialized and you need to have the old one and the new one or they will have to break the tire down to get it. I did find this site lol http://www.toyotatpms.com/toyota-tpms-replacement.html interesing one part of a vehicle has it's own website lol. That said I did find alot of people stating most GOOD tire shops have the equip to do it and don't charge alot of money vs stealership that is. Hope it helps somewhat.

Go to a discount tire and tell them that you need your sensors reset. It'll take maybe 15 minutes.
That's if you're already have the wheels and tires on with the sensors in them.

 

i have the numbers, they will be installed already on the truck. can discount tire program them? im selling my steel wheel sensors and getting some alloy sensors tomorrow. if discount can do it that might save me some trouble

 

you need a dealership computer to reprogram new sensors to the toyota computer

Discount can reprogram the sensors. They should have all the tools to do it.

 

i wonder why someone said this was a machine only available at the dealership?

It's a decently expensive little piece of equipment though. Maybe that's why.

But bottom line, don't go to the stealership to get your sensors reset. It's called the stealership for a reason

Standard minimum labor charge.

It only takes 5 minutes to perform the work, but the service bay is going to be unavailable while the service manager and tech process related paperwork, set up and cleanup, etc...

You'll generally only get a 1/2 hour labor charge as a part of a 2+ hour job, or if you have a very good relationship with the manager. It's just not worth the dealerships time to do a job like this for the $15 that the hourly labor rate would break down to if they only billed for the actual 10 minutes it takes.


No... There the dealers tend to fuck people on labor is when two repairs are requested, and performing one is a PART of the other, but they bill for both labor line items.
Example: Replace timing belt and water pump.
The timing belt has to come off to replace the water pump, so adding the belt to a water pump job should be parts-only.
I was quoted $600 from one dealer and $800 from another. I did it myself for $350 in parts.
