If you want to haul long things i say the thule one, that is extendable. I don't have kayaks but i've hauled them just fine in my AC cab. I do have a bed rack thought.

I love my roof rack! I have a rhino rack with an inno fairing. No real gas mileage difference or noise, and it looks and works great. Oem won't do much for you though. 100lbs weight limit kinda limits it's usefulness. That's a kayak and a half...

That poor woman must have been busted up pretty bad :(

These threads just leave me scratching my head. Yea sure a rack is VERY useful,.......IF you have something to put in it! Right? If you don't have the need then not so useful right?? I have a rack because I use it, but if I ever quit needing it, it's coming off. The main reason is that they all create drag and drop fuel mileage. They get hung up offroad too.

I didn't even answer the poll because it's pointless for anyone to tell anyone else they need a rack,...or don't.

When theyre in the stowed position (OEM) I can't see how that would that would make much of a diiference in mpg, minimal at most. Gettin hung up on stuff - that's what they make chainsaws for.

Good timing for this thread - I've been thinking about getting the OEM roof rack as well. Paired with a hitch-mounted 3rd point rack it would work perfect for kayaks or other long loads. Anyone priced the cheapest place to buy/install?

I went with OEM + BajaRack and I really really wish this 2nd generation Bajarack was available at the time.

I haul either two oversize Kamp-Rite Tent Cots for desert trips or one black IM3220 Storm Case for long road trips.

If money weren't an issue I would remove my current setup and replace it with the 2nd gen BajaRack in a heart beat. The OEM bars just aren't strong enough for my needs. The bow in my bars have flattened out and the ends of the bars scare me. Only a matter of time until they break and with my luck it would be in the middle of the desert.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used set of OEM bars and a 1st generation BajaRack? ;)

bridaw, you may want to consider craigslisting your roof rack and bajarack. I'd bet you sell them without too much difficulty... Use the proceeds to reinvest in the 2nd gen bajarack. That im3220 case is mighty expensive (at least from my google searches).

Long shit can sit in the bed, stick out and be lashed to the rack, overhanging the cab. Think canoes, surfboards, your mom's dildo, that kind of thing. (chuckle chuckle, it's a joke).

The 100lb. limit is so Toyota is off the hook if some moron caves their roof in trying to stow a motorcycle up there. I have no doubt it could take more, but I never plan to test it. Why the hell would you want all that weight that high up? Rolly poly.

I added one just for looks. I don't plan to use it, but it may be useful for future multi-day overlanding journies. I have a daily drive Corolla for fuel mileage, and I would have no problem scratching this thing up a bit on tree branches.

They complete the look of the truck in my opinion. OP should get one.

CYA may be part of it but the OEM bars really can't handle much weight. 100 pounds isn't much and I have probably exceeded that which is why my bars are flattening out and the ends are tweaked. I want that much weight up there because two oversized tent-cots won't fit in the bed with the rest of the gear. Neither will a IM3220 Storm Case -or two.

That's what I initially thought, but doubt it based on how far forward he has it and the tonneau he's got.
