Why are INDY cars so ugly ?

    They are no longer open wheel racers though

    They are now just ugly

    Its also so they can adapt better to the racing that they are doing (oval, road, street)

    They wanted to take away the possibility of tire contact during a crash and help the aerodynamics of the vehicles.

    I dont think they are ugly at all, just different to what last years car looked like, they are safer, sponsors are happy with the big rear wing and huge side pods, and they make really really good racing..

    In a few years when the next indy car comes you will say it looks ugly compared to this, always happens when something different comes out

    The ONLY thing I like about INDY is that they refuel during the race

    Never really been an Indycar fan, So does this mean the cars now look similar to the Le Mans Prototype cars?

    Just doesn't make sense if they are.

    yeah but at the end of the day, the performance is good, cars are reliable, racing is good. And i guarentee if you drove a proper open wheel car around an oval you would not mind a bit more wheel coverage even if the looks are a bit silly. To the general public its not a hugely noticable thing.

    and you still need to drive it like an openwheel car with no contact as oppose to a prototype, just the consequenses for a little contact or a small mistake are hopefully a little less now in the 2012 car.

    F1 will not implement the aero change rules similar to the new Indy chassis.

    The main reason for the changes was the risk of wheel contact when running oval tracks (think of the Dan Wheldon crash). The front nose was implemented to allow the teams to make minor changes in aero packages when changing track conditions and racing types.

    All about safety. I grew up by the Indy 500 track and when Jim Clark's Lotus was introduced as the first rear engine car people didn't like it either. It just never would replace the front engine rodster, they found it was safer and faster.

    well Dallara does make a Daytona Prototype Chassis for the Rolex Grand AM Series, so maybe they took that into consideration when designing the new Indy Chassis
