Google Images was pretty much a fail, found tons of 1st gens though.

I have a friend whose got access to the tools required to fab up a set of tube doors for his JK. I've always wanted a set and figure if we build 'em then it'll only be cost of materials and I can get a chance to learn a little about welding. Anyone with a 2nd gen that has tube/rock doors have any pics?

Also, anyone have any links or advice on learning how to work with metal? I'm really excited at the possibility of making my own parts, but my knowledge is almost zero. Nothing beats hands on experience, but I'd like to atleast have a bit of book knowledge first.

Could have sworn I've seen a pic of a 2nd gen with tube doors on TW before

I was thinking about this the other day. Either tube doors, or those doors that start out as actual doors, but get the tops cut off and smoothed over with sheet metal and bondo I'm assuming. If done correctly those look really good IMO.

This is pretty much the only truck I've found that has 'em on a second gen.

I know more are out there, I've seen a few float around here and TTORA, but search skills are not up to par apparently.

Stupid x2. The guy has a build thread on here. He has a bunch of mud slung all over the inside of the fabric covered cab.

Meh, Looks are subjective. I'm no puddle pirate, I think it would be fun for the beach and just as a way to experiment learning a new skill.

I also completely intend on ditching the stupid carpet in my '05. I wonder if the rubber flooring from the 2012 would be too different since the rear seats are different to make it work in my '05. Why they put carpet in a truck is beyond me.

There is only one set of tube doors for the 2nd gen and that picture is it. No one to this date makes them, and no one has made them except mark. NwiTACO. He got rid of them due to the weird look of a DC and only front tube doors

I thought about this the entire way home today. My local shop can do it but for a pretty penny. My only concern is the speakers (all are in the doors on a DC). Now I could drive around silently but I cannot allow some douchebag in a Civic to blare his rap/dance music while Whitechapel stays silent on my iPod.

working with metal is awesome when you dont do it for a living. you wanted tips.

if using a bender, buy extra tube to practice and figure out exactly where to put your mark, whether it is start of bend, center of bend, end of bend, wherever is a good reference for you to set up the bend. this is crucial to

good welds: fitment is key, notch the tubes correctly, and dont forget to add the notch-depth into your math. if you dont have access to a hydraulic shear with a notching setup, i pray you have access to a drill -press, a good vice underneath it and the correct size hole-saw. you can make good notches this way, and allows you to notch at an angle very easily.

welding itself is easy. it just takes a bit of experience. dont focus on doing "c's" or circles or "j's" or any kind of motion unless you are tig welding. if so, your experienc (no offence) will mandate that you just do what it takes to fill the weld. you can always smooth it in after its filled, without rod now, and make a pretty, smooth bead.

if wire-feeding, (mig, gmaw, whatever) a setup with gas would be optimum. unless you are pulsing it, a gas shielded weld is very difficult to run uphill, i would suggest running at machine specs (the chart under the wire-spool door, follow it in the correct area for your wire size and gas. it IS important) downhill. if running flux-cored wire (fcaw) and no gas, start with machine specs, and run it however you like, up down, whatever. i said start with machine specs, you may have to fine tune, as i've noticed different wire manufacturers vary greatly as to exactly what settings will run best.

and remember, a bead stacked with big spaces looks like a weld, but the best weld is one that fullfils its structural duty while not being obvious. keep it tight, and it will look nice. and oh, grind marks show through paint and scream MISTAKE! play with it, and good luck with your new hobby! you will enjoy
