Need Car Audio Wiring Expert

So I have a 12" kicker L5 dual voice coil. About 6 months back a buddy of mine required it to 1 ohm. It's worked fine up until now, any song I play that has a good kick to it just shuts off my amp powering my sub, essentially making my sub useless. I was tonna to to him to fix it but he lives a solid 45 minutes away. So before I go to him I figured Id ask here. So how do I.... Un-rewire my sub, to turn it back to factory condition? I want to give it a shot because it took my friend all of like 5 minutes to rewire it.

That's strange that it would just stop working like that. Your amp wasn't overheating? All the fuses are good? You didn't fry your wiring? If your box has a plastic terminal cup check that. I melted one of them suckers on my last box. Other than that you have a to wire it just like the first picture on the right on this page.http://www.kicker.com/dvc_wiring

 

If you know how many ohms your sub is, you can then use this link to rewire to an impedance your amp is stable at.

If your amp isn't 1 ohm stable it will shut it off....

Assuming your sub is 2ohm DVC, it sounds like your sub is wired in parallel (positive from one voice coil to the positive of the other, then the negative from one wired to the other negative. Then from one of the voice coils it should go out to the terminals on your box. You need to run your sub in series to gain 4 ohm. Take the POSITIVE from one voice coil and put it to the NEGATIVE of the other voice coil. Now take the POSITIVE from the terminal where the negative is already jumpered to the other voice coil and then the NEGATIVE where it is jumpered to the positive on the other voice coil and run those to the box termianl. If you have a DMM, validate the impedance is 4ohm.

Please list exact model of sub and amp. Is your amp 1 or 2 channel?? And please take you sub out of the box and check if it has 1 set of.wires connecting to it or 2
We need to know how many voice coils are on your sub and how many ch your amp is. With that we can get it rewired easily. You can pm me if you want. But seems like most people that responded are on the right track.

 

My amp is an alpine 500 watt mono block, my sub is a DVC 4ohm kicker l5

Cosgrc was right, the postive terminal was on the postive and the negative was on the negative. So I switched it around, now should I be all good?

 

If its 4ohm DVC, then it should only be 2ohm parallel and 8ohm if you went series? Not sure how you got 1ohm. If the amp is mono, only use 1 channel, don't attempt to bridge the amp.

 

So I have the positive wire to the negative terminal and vice versa



The thing that doesn't look factory is the wire going from the terminal im pointing at, to the terminal on the other side of the magnet

 

That's way past my knowledge I haven't touched the amp.

 

Its beyond anyone because its not part of this reality. You cannot bridge a one channel amp. Bridging is taking a 2 channel amp and turining it into a one channel amp by connecting the positive of one channel to the negative of the other.

 

Had to edit cause i thought you had 2 subs. If you are at 1 ohm your coils are 2 ohms each coil. Youll go to 4 ohns by rewiring.

 

These are you ONLY two options... not sure how you got 1ohm.

Only thing I can think of is your amp has only 1 channel, but has 2 blocks on it so you can connect more than 1 speaker to it without splicing... your buddy may have thought it was a 2ch and wired you subs to 2ohms, then "bridged" your amp which would produce a little less than 1ohm but technically that's not possible with a mono block amp. It just appears that way. If your putting that amp into protection mode with only 2 ohms then either your gains are way to high and its clipping or overheating, or your amp is messed up inside, or 1 or more of the coils on your sub are blown which lowers the impedance (ohms) and therefore dropping your amp below 1ohm

 

You need a DMM or digital multi meter and you need to completely disconnect all wires from your sub and measure your voice coils impedance to see if they are still at 4ohms. If not, its blown, causing a short circuit at high voltage and therefore putting the amp into protection.

 

Ok well I ran som diagnostics and tests and my sub is fine, I have back to 4 ohms but my amp is fried. So I was looking at the kicker DX 1000.1

 

I'm actually going to pick up a kenwood eXcelon x1200m tomorrow for 160

 

How did you determine that the amp is fried??
