Now the engine is whining at idle and up to about 4000 rpm. Got to say when I opened the engine bay you could not make out anything due to the mud. Any ideas?

The engine bay is spotless now. Just in case someone suggests cleaning it

one of your idler bearings is probably going out. Spray some WD40 on each one with the truck at idle, if the noise stops you found the problem one.

If whine corresponds to rpm its an idler.

Intake is clean. Can someone explain what I am looking for when you say idlers?

BTW I baby this truck. We had a major storm and this one puddle was taunting me..... Almost daring me to go through it...... And since it was my only way home I had no choice! I suppose I should have gone through slowly but I figured the quicker I go through the less time my baby has to stay in it.

Dad's truck, minor mods.. Saving for my own :)
I wish I was at the WD40 phase but I need new idle wheels because my truck "jumps" around. Definitely clean them off really well so their not off balanced or going to become loose.
Make sure you don't ruin your crank seal, too.

I agree it's likely the idler pulley. When I get the truck muddy it happens to me too. I think I've replaced two of them.

I know it is off topic, but I am wondering why the diagram is showing a "Generator" pulley. I haven't dug into any schematics for these trucks, but generators pretty much disappeared in the 50's and 60's.

Did Toyota design a blast from the past, or is the diagram just wrong?
