It's the most built 1GR I know of......You've done an absolutely sick job with it.

I personally think anything but a your 1GR or a 2JZ (because it's THE legendary Toyota powerplant) would take away from the build. Hats off to you once again.

^^^That comment right there is one of the main reasons of what this thread is all about. I am no forefather, on the 1GR, by any means, but I have personally taken my engine or tuning farther than most. In directions that few have, or none have. Whether they documented their experiences, to the degree which I have, I am not aware of.

That being said, the culmination of knowledge I have learned, added to that of this build of mine, is specifically for those that wish to do something of this nature. With out having to deal with the mistakes that I have had to overcome.

For example, my friend Toon, as well as in smaller degree, Sik X.

Ya man, i learned a TON building up my supra motor..sadly never got to see it run..as i got addicted to the Taco before i finished it :p

takes a TON of know how though for turbo stuff without a doubt. Props for making it this far!

Still kinda want to on mine haha tho i would be a power monster like yours would, just a small boost like 4 psi off a TINY turbo. Ill probably end up SCed tho..

2 and a half hours and a hard on later.. I've finished reading all 10 pages of this build. All I can say is wow. I literally felt as If I was reading a script to a movie. Your attention to detail with your truck and this write up is amazing.

I have no knowledge of turbo's or the internal workings of an engine, let alone our tacos. My powerplant knowledge basically stems from Powerblock TV... :p

I have always been interested In the technical side and guts of our trucks.. as this is my third Taco and I am very much into vehicles. Being as I am from a small town tho, with very entry level knowledge of engines, suspension, etc, I was always threatened by what it takes to learn and understand.. which in turn, made me stray from continuing to learn.

After joining this site (third Tacoma in) I have learned alot.. mostly suspension, cosmetic, entry level stuff.. but you sir, have opened that door all over again. I could not peel myself away from this thread. Not only do i know more of the engine and turbos in general, but now I WANT a turbo! Lol. I've never really been a fan of them, due to the complexity, sound, and "lag" (don't rip me too hard lol), but this has really got me thinking.

In all honesty tho, it probably wont happen. I am more of a 'wheeler and just can't see myself making my truck a power beast like this. It seems like so much trouble, work, money, and stress.. all of which I don't have much of or can't take.. so.. that being said.. I bow to you good sir.. an unbelievable build thread. Best of luck and thank you.

    Oh... And sub'd :D

Sorry for the long post :(

I appreciate the compliments Moose. Thank you.

I was basically in the same shoes that you are in, when I started this whole endeavor. I didn't know anything about performance. I knew how to off-road, whether in the mud, or on the trails. It wasn't hard, but my friend convinced me that nothing is like the feel of a turbo kit spooling up. Thus the far more expensive adventure I have undertaken, than the route of a Solid Axle swap. Which I was debating between.

Don't worry about the long post. Speak your mind and ask your questions if you have any. Otherwise, how can you learn?

I have a lot more to share for this build. Trust me. It just takes a while to compile.

If turbos weren't so stupid expensive id get one thanks to what I've seen from Mark and Toon... can't justify the cost for this pickup though

Torspd, I've gotta ask, do you torture test you engine at all?? Mine ends up running at 4000+ rpm's for hours on end, it's given me some unique problems.

Shoot, the turbos aren't necessarily the expensive part. You can get a Precision Turbo 6266 or 6766 for $8-900. Journal bearing. It is having everything else fabbed up that is the the expensive part.

But if you have it done similar to Toon's or Sik X's the fab work for the turbo is actually very simple for a fabricator. Since the OEM or Doug Thorley headers are used, instead of creating a one-off tubular header.

I have never actually had the stretch of road to be able to have cruise control set at that high an rpm in 5th or 6th gear. Maybe if I was in second gear....Lol. I can go to 50 in first, and cannot remember how fast in second.

I bet you just need some nice ceramic bearings to replace the ones in you OEM idler pulleys.

Check here, and I will also post it in your build. http://www.microbluebearings.com/

That is actually the first thing that popped into my mind as well. That pic is hilarious though!!! Lmao

Moving forward with the build, on the 23rd of April '11, I went back in to do some more fab time.

I had to order a couple more tight radius 90 degree bends, in after the last bit of work we had done. In order to make a specific U-turn, the bend was too tight for what one could purchase. The mandrel bender couldn't make a bend on a 180 degree tube, with that tight of a center line radius. So, thus the reason that two 90 degree bends were necessary. The Centerline Radius which was necessary was 2.25". The 180 degree bends only came in a 2.5" centerline radius.

^^^ and by the way, one of my favorite energy drinks.

So once those parts were in, and PowerFab's and my schedules worked out, it was time to get back to work.

The cross-over all tacked up, and ready to be fully welded.

    IMAG0824_e451500ab41bcfe6a374fe2133a0010ea1bf6085.jpg

In the pic below, if you look at the cross-member, you can just make out the welds where the piece was re-installed, after it had been cut out for the ProComp lift.

    IMAG0823_d76c797c17fbc6c5576e0a3281efafcd88ec648d.jpg

Here is a really good pic to show how low the cross-over tubing sits. Even at this angle you can see that it is tucked up plenty high for clearance. Made sure to leave room beneath the drive shaft also. In preparation for the new AWD T56 in the future.

Here are the the cross-over, and down pipe, all finished up.

    IMAG0844_bff84688a735c0fc0ece8d1033fffb2e9f916451.jpg

The flex coupling in the cross-over is a "turbo lined" stainless flex coupling. Meant to hold boost pressures. It wasn't really necessary, but it helps line things up during install.

The one in the down pipe is extremely necessary. Helps let the exhaust flex when the engine torques. Keeps crack at bay. It is also a Vibrant Performance turbo lined coupling.

This is the return port for the turbo drain. Nifty little idea from another member named Rexrunner.

It is actually the timing chain tensioner inspection cover, on the passenger side of the timing cover. Best features of this, is that the piece can be removed to drill it. So no metal shavings in the oil pan. As well, it is very easy to install/remove.

Just wait to I get some new pics of the new stuff that I have going on.

PowerFab has always been pretty cool about letting a customer bring in their own material. That can save some time and money, in the sense that you can purchase your parts over time, until you get everything needed for the project. Not all shops are like that. That is how i did mine, so I wouldn't be out a huge chunk of change.
