Venting about Gardening & the rabbits.....

Ahhh it's spring time. Time for yard clean-up, garage cleanup, planting new things, getting your veggie garden ready & so-on.

I enjoy doing all that stuff but I totally suck at it. I know nothing about plants (other than what I research) and nothing about maintaining them and I've made my own attempts at pruning/thinning (which - I don't cut off enough and they get overgrown BAD). Last year I hired this lady to come and prune everything..... She had this gas powered chain-saw-sounding thing and she just shaped everything. I COULD'VE DONE THAT!! I've done that every year for 12 years!!

But anyway.... I have my own little strawberry patch that's fenced in. They've survived for about 3 years now - so atleast, I CAN GROW something.
With my history...if I look at something the wrong way, it dies!!!

We have a bad case of RABBITS out here that eat everything!!! I've spent gobs of money on stuff and the rabbits chomp it down to nothing. Bushes & shrubs are OK....but flowering plants & such. GONE. They don't eat the daffodills - apparently, they're posioness to them & the voles?

Just venting. I need some ground cover...anti rabbit edible ground cover. I've heard English Ivy/Vines aren't on rabbits menu - but I also read that it spreads like a MOFO (even I can't kill it??). I think Azalia bushes are pretty...and would like to plant some of those... but are they easy to take care of?

I'm all about 'hearty' plants that survive in all conditions...stuff that doesn't require reqular pruning/thinning. Our soil here isn't the greatest (hard) and I just don't like to spend a lot of time out in the garden.


We've been in our house for 12 years. We have Mulberry & Holy bushes out front that I absolutely HATE !! But, I put up with them cuz I don't know what else to plant (and they're ALIVE and put up with me!!!)

I'm pathetic. I'm much happier in the garage with a tool in my hand.

Some have had success keeping them away by using predator urine like coyote or bobcat.


I wish that crazy rabbit that was here last year would come back cause all I ever saw him eat was dandelions, he'd move through the yard all day long going from plant top plant and completely devour them

The other day, my husband spotted 5 rabbits in the back yard. I know there are rabbit nests too. My neighbor put fencing around his entire landscaping. He's a gardening Hobbyist big time!! If he can't detere them with pseudo methods - then I certainly won't be able to. Certain times of the year, we have a HAWK in the neighborhood that eats the birds. Damn, I wish he'd come and eat the rabbits!!

I have a new airsoft pistol that I need practice with....

 

How weak of a stomach do you have? If you dont, then go get you a trap or 2. Im not quite sure what number it would be probably a #1. You could get a cat. I mean one more on the wild side. Not one that wont come up to you but one that likes to go kill things. I used to have a 20lbs cat (not a lot of fat on him) that would go hunt rabbits. Or if you could get a camera used for hunting that picks up movement. Then you'd know if you have more than just rabbit problems and maybe get an idea of when they come. Go out there during that time with a .22 and take care of em. You might not like these options but they are options, just depends on how pissed you get.

 

no need to kill em, you can set traps that wouldn't harm them then you could relocate em
