I picked up a new '09 Tacoma last week. It has the wiring for the backup camera but it has a plastic blank instead of the camera.

I took the tailgate apart today to have a look at the wiring, etc. The pictures are below.

I have contacted a couple backup camera sellers. If I find something that fits, I will post the install. I imagine that the dealer would sell me a camera but it's likely very expensive.

    Cheers.

It easy to take the tailgate apart

Don't remove the top rail, just remove all the screws and then remove the large plastic cover.

I removed the connects. The wire harness is attached to a plastic blank.

not to many, love it the way it is
I find myself checking the rear view and looking out for little kids when I back up now. I bet these back up cameras will save a few lives

It looks like you have the wiring harness but not the camera. And I would guess that if you feel around under the headliner above the mirror you will find the other end of the harness with the plug that goes to the mirror. I have an '09 basic access I got last October (built in CA) and I got the camera but no mirror/monitor. I recently replaced my OEM tailgate handle with a Pop & Lock PL5300 and my tailgate wiring looks just like yours except I got the cam.

Check out some of the threads about about the DIY mods like DRL, Cruise and others. They list several sources of dealers who offer online OEM parts. It could be they can hook you up with an OEM cam. I would think that an OEM cam with that fits the OEM plug and mount in the tailgate handle would be an easier fix than rigging up a non OEM unit. Gentex also offers a mirror monitor unit specifically made for the Taco with the appropriate plug.

I heard back from a guy who sells backup cameras. He said that the connector on his camera is different from the wiring harness.

I am going to call the dealership tomorrow to see if they sell the camera, how much it is and the part number. If it's too expensive, I may order the camera from China and see if I can wire it up.

    Cheers.

I called the dealership. They do not have the camera listed as an accessory, just as a replacement part. They want $497.80 just for the camera LMAO. I asked him if that included the mirror etc. and he said no that was just for the camera.

Here is the part number: 86790-040-10

Guess I'll be buying from China!!
I'll let you guys know how it goes when i get it installed.

    Cheers.

Stang88: did you find some kind of harness to get from the factory plug in the headliner to the 700BT?

That's the correct part #, I just pulled the backup camera from my 2009 Tacoma. I do not need it & would take a reasonable offer for it(you could also have the tailgate wire-harness). My Tacoma is brand new(600 miles on it). I would need your plastic blank mailed to me, so I could plug my hole. Camera's been sold, thanx all!

I ended up purchasing the tailgate camera (Thanks NuovoTech!!!) and then I purchased an original rearview mirror off ebay. Everything worked great!!

Here is a picture I took of my daughter looking at the camera. LOL :D

    Cheers.

Yes the wiring is there. If you stick your finger up in the headliner/window gap, you will feel it. I couldn't get it down and I didn't want to force it so I took the overhead console down so that I could access it more easily. It's held up there pretty good with some tape.

    Cheers.

At the bottom center of the tailgate. There is a plug there.

Correction, after looking at it the wire comes from the right side at the bottom of the tailgate. The camera was added in the '09 models so the '05 probably won't have the wiring. To remove the tailgate there is a plug just under the bed.

there's what looks to be like a drain hole in the bottom middle of my 05 bed, I can run the wiring out there then through the spare tire provision with a plug if I want the tailgate off
