Thanks for the input. I am just trying to cover my ass in the future so I am not stuck with a worthless poorly designed tailgate! I will take it up with toyota directly to get a case number

It is fraud, or at best dishonest, when you attempt to break something intentionally and then seek reimbursement.

The last thing I want to do is get in legal trouble or exploit warranties making it harder for anyone else to get work done who needs it. Thanks for input wilson! That what I was asking originally if i should test my tailgate before my warranty runs out. If it fails, I obviously need a new one, if not I can keep it and rest assured. I was hoping there was a better way to do this without causing issues.

I would just use it as you normally do. I'm not saying that if you are bringing home a new washing machine and it needs to sit on the tailgate that you shouldn't. I jnow I could do that in Ford and Chevy trucks I've owned in the past so if I need to do it with this truck, you bet your ass I will. If it breaks, so be it, I'll be at the Toyota dealer so fast it'll make their heads spin. I would just have a problem with jumping on it or something like that to break it intentionally.

That is my issue currently. I am in college so I don't drive it too often, and certainly don't put a big load in. However I know in the future I might get a dirtbike or quad and will want to roll it up into my bed via the tailgate. I would rather have piece of mind that I can do this without having to take the tailgate off. I will be keeping this truck for the life of it so I am trying to anticipate all the issues I can before my warranty expires.

This is what i do not understand about the tailgates. I am 250, and pulled up deer standing on the tail gate. Never seemed to have an issue, but now everytime I get on it I have second thoughts about the whole thing.
I just hate to see people having issues with them, maybe I should keep my mouth shut, cause now I will most likely bend mine..............

Hunting is another example of why i want to make sure I have a solid tailgate. I just hate having to wonder how mine will hold up. I just want toyota to make sure I have that piece of mind so I guess it will be left up to them if they want to deliver

I am going to look into a piece of alum, cut to fit. I know a member here has done it, and I believe is gonna make them.

Is Toyota not doing the TSB any longer?

Too bad Seth isn't making them anymore.

The fix still works after your warranty expires- if you want to pay for it.

If he meant you can still get covered for free. I think he's mistaken...The TSB specifically says it applies during the 36K/3yr comprehensive warranty.

I have comp insurance so even if Toyota won't replace it I could get it fixed for the $50 deductible. Now if Toyota would just slap on a new one for free, I'd be happy; and I'd still take it apart & reinforce it myself.

But IIRC, under warranty Toyota will just straighten my gate, stick in some stamped reinforcements with some pop rivets, and repaint it. If somebody's going to "fix" it to make it stronger, it's going to be me.

I suppose if I kinked it real good (not on purpose you understand  ) they would probably have to get me a brand new one. I just can't understand how this issue has been around for the life of the Gen-II Tacos and Toyota ain't done nuthin' about it.

That's incorrect on both counts. They stopped doing the TSB at one point, many folks on here discussed it. And, you are not entitled to a TSB after your warranty expires unless the dealership does it out of the goodness of their hearts.

yes pics would be handy. I was just reading about this last night and I need to go out and investigate if mine had the TSB done before I got it or not. I've loaded my motorcycles in and out of it a few times with no issues but I would like to make sure before I do it again :goingcrazy:

Nice idea. Did you install any internal reinforcement at all?
