Kinda bummed to hear that several Japanese climbers were swept away by an avalanche on the slopes of McKinley. Search for them was suspended and they will rest on the mountain with so many others.

Oct 2011. High desert south of Mono Lake in California. 8500 ft. and very desolate. 28 degrees and high winds at night though.

So I think I've settled on a plan for the weekend...
If all goes well I hope to have everything packed and ready to go so I can hit the road right after work on Friday. Camp out somewhere around West Yellowstone (90 minutes away) Friday night then get up early and haul ass through Yellowstone to get to Grand Teton & Jenny Lake before the campgrounds there fill up. I have 2 back up plans but I really, really want to camp on the lake. Keep your fingers crossed for me that I can find a spot! I hope to spend the rest of the day exploring the area outside of the park, something I haven't done a lot of before. Sunday will be spent hiking around Jenny Lake, part way up Cascade Canyon and then catch the ferry back across the lake. And home on Monday, back through Yellowstone.

Cascade Canyon (not my pics but you can see why I want to go there!)

spent last weekend on a backpacking trip with my buddy. it turned into an interesting weekend. here's the cliff's notes story from another thread. went back today to get the stuff we left behind. all in all between hiking friday and saturday and today we covered over 40 miles and had over 12,500 feet in total elevation change.

still waiting on the good pics from my buddy...

I hope it is...never been up that exact trail before. I hear its steep though. I hope I'm not too adventurous for my first real outing of the year!
I hope it all works out as I want it to *fingers crossed*
Thanks Aaron! I'm always extra cautious, especially on new territory.

glad to hear you guys got out and were able to get back in to rescue the truck!
Was this a new fire? thats one of my fears actually...being out and getting cut off by fire.

Looks like it was a pretty area though...can't wait for more pics!

yeah Lisa, it was a new fire. it's has since been put out and was less than 500 acres, so it was relatively small but it was in the exact area that i was in.

the fire got as close as 500 feet from my truck where it was parked at the trail head. pretty wild

I have used Google tracks on my Android before and it works well. I just stumbled upon this one from Code Sector called Maverick. Code Sector makes a better copy tool that I use, Tera Copy.
While your there check out 'Speed View' and 'Here I Am' all of these might be helpful for the avid camper, hiker, biker, outdoors man or woman.
