alignment question with TC upper arms....

What is the most amount of caster we can run on these trucks and keep them handling well. I want more caster because my tires hits the rear part of the fender. I have cut the frame and welding in a plate, but I still rub a little on the fender now and I have cut all the plastic I can. I notice the wheel is closer to rear of the fender than the front and I know increasing the caster will move it forward so that i why I want to do this.
How are people clearing 285s with TC upper arms, because the arms move the wheel back and make it rub?

 

Hope you didn't install the TC UCA's on the wrong side, this would cause some issues for sure. Double check your installation.

 

No because when you increase caster from the adjustments at the bottom. It moves the lower control arm forward.
Moving the UCA rear ward increases caster and moving the lower one forward increases caster.
That is why aftermarket UCA move the top of the spindle rearward, this is what causes the rubbing with larger tires on the cab mount and back part of fender.

 

I understand what positive and negative caster is and the benefit of running aftermarket UCAs, I have the Camburg UCAs with Sway-A-Way 2.5 coilovers running 285/75-R16 BFGoorich All-Terrains. I had to remove the mud flap and trim the very bottom of the wheel well, but I don't have any rubbing on the frame, body or anything like you are describing. I did get an alignment done after isntalling the suspension and this helped tremendously with the way the truck drove on the street/highway.

I have done some reasearch on Toyotanation.com and have found that some people are running upwards of 4 degrees castor with UCAs to get the tire centered in the wheel well. Mine is set at about 3 and it is definately closer to the rear than the front. If I could center it, I would be GOLDEN.

 

NO! If you add Caster it will move the wheel forward. (Due to the fact that the adjustment cams are located on the LCA's)

But! You may increase the chance of Bump steer if you go too high.

Try adding a bit more lift.

If I remember correctly you have the ICON's???

Order a ToyTec top plate spacer. That way you can increase (Tweak) the amount of lift you have to give you the clearance you need. Without over extending the Icons.

Some people have this issue because of different reasons. i.e. tire size difference in brands, or they are not getting the full 3" of lift.

When I had my 3" lift (ToyTec 885) I actually had 3.25" of lift.

Just watch your CV boots. You can "cheat" by removing the outer clamp and pulling the boot out, so the fins don't rub. Put a drop of super glue so it doesn't slide back and clamp it secure.

 

I did not know you could use the Toytec top plate spacers with coilovers. Makes sense that you could though. Are the bolts that come with ICON coilovers long enough to accomodate the spacers?

 

You may need longer bolts.
I had custom spacers on my Fabtech CO's. Keeps the ride soft, rather than cranking them up.

 

Thanks, I already ordered a set from Toytec. The bolts will be easy to find once they come in. I will get the specs from ICON and find a set that is 1/4 longer. This will let me lower my coilovers down 2 turns or so. That will be great.

 

Just ordered the 3/4" spacers from ToyTec to add to my Sway-A-Way front coilovers, I hate having them cranked so high and firm.

We'll see how this works.

 

3/4 inch don't you mean 1/4 inch. The top plate spacers are 1/4 inch, RIGHT!?

 

I assume this is what you are talking about:
I ordered the ones with out the bolts. If you have coilovers the bolts are unnessary because they are the wrong kind. You are going to have to hit up a hardware store and get bolts that are 1/4 inch longer than the ones you got.
I this these are the same spacers as the 1/4 inch spacers, right? The ones that come with the bolts are $10 more.

I have heard they only provide about 1/2 inch of lift, but either way I am happy. I don't want to have to sag my coilovers to far because I have the rear TSB and it rides pretty stiff with the 5100s. I wouln't want it to handle unevenly.

 

No! The 3/4" spacer is actually 1/2" thick spacer that comes with the longer studs.

Call Doug to see if you can get a discount for just the spacer without the studs.

That is the spacer that I was referring to.

My spacer is 5/8" which gives me 1" of lift.

one claims to give 1/2 of lift and the other claims 3/4 inch of lift. I thought they were the same. What is the difference?

Don't need the studs, since I have the coilovers, I will call ToyTec tomorrow and see if they can send the spacers without them. I'm not trying to get a discount, but don't want them to send unnecessary parts.
