Need opinions on choosing aftermarket Hood Scoop

Hey all. So you all know how hard it is to get a factory scooped hood anywhere without paying ridiculous prices. Well, I've been searching for a month now, and have settled on two scoop styles for my black 2012 Tacoma Access Cab. I can't decide which to get! One looks great but seems a little too big, but the other looks good too, but seems a little small. There is no in between so please give me your opinions on which one looks the best. The first one is the big one, while the second is the small one. Thanks in advance.

Both are major lame and look like shit. The big one isn't horribly bad, but it's bad. The small one is horribly horrible and looks like a $20 auto parts store stick-on.
Neither will be functional.

The center of the hood is a low-pressure zone... not that there's any way that the air from the scoop would get into the intake even if it were functional.

Splash water on your hood and hit the freeway at 80.
Watch how long it takes for the water to oh-so-slowly migrate across the hood.

Are those the hood scoops you attach onto your hood? If so I hope you really reconsider and just save up for the original sport hood. IMHO those look ridiculous and just one way to ruin a brand new truck. Either wait and see what aftermarket hoods w/scoops come out or go original. You never know you might get lucky and someone might trade you for your non-scooped hood on TW.

 

Thanks for the honest opinion. These are actually pretty high quality and cost anywhere from $240-$290 painted. I really want a hood scoop, and feel that these are my only options besides forking over a large amount of cash. Plus, the new scoop on the 2012 looks kind of ugly. It's too thin and small, but a stock hood would be nice regardless.

 

You can get an '06 sport hood and the 3 scoop parts for less than $300. Another couple hundred for paint and you're set.
Not sure what availability is on the '12 sport hood, but if not now, it will soon be in the same range and at least it'll be factory.

 

Yeah, I'm considering that too. I've had an ad on Craigslist for a month now to see if anyone is willing to trade along with some cash. No luck yet. Maybe that's why I haven't seen any pics of people with aftermarket scoops on their Tacomas on google.

 

If you're not in a rush, which I'm guessing you're not, I would just wait and get a good aftermarket or original hood. No so many are willing to trade their scooped hoods, but it does happen.

 

Yeah, I guess I'm just wanting to have the truck look complete once I get it and add whatever I need to it. The hood "IS" quite an important part that I wouldn't want screwed up.

 

Just a heads up, there's a thread on this forum that's several pages long of people looking to trade both scooped and non-scooped hoods from people of various parts of the country located here. Also, just so you aren't as shocked by pricing as I was after I acquired a scooped hood, budget at least $400 for painting. I had several people tell me two hundred dollars and that simply doesn't exist. Most professional paint places will also want to blend your upper fenders which will drive that price up even further. Best paint match I could find was at our local Toyota dealership's body shop (no surprise there) and it was pretty much an exact match but they wanted $370 just to paint a hood not even on the truck. He also said that depending on prep that price could go up even more so that's why I said budget $400 so you're prepared. Now I've had a scooped hood sitting in my garage for months because instead of $200 for paint it ended up being $400+ which I can't bring myself to spend right now. If you think $300-$400 for a hood and then $200 for paint is a bit of a pill to swallow another $200 for paint makes it that much worse.

The bigger skewp looks better. I think the OEM TRD Sport scoop looks too feminine. Having the scoop made larger and more squared-off to match the angles of the grille is an... acceptable approach.

Just watch the spending. A Carbon Creations hood is $560, and you can leave it unpainted.

I agree with you on the newer scoop of the 2012. It looks like a freakin mail slot. It just looks weird. I was leaning towards the bigger scoop as well, but a little hesistant to get it now. It would cost me $270 painted, so that's no chump change. I could play the waiting game and pay someone $200 on top of the scooped hood and end up with an ok scoop, but atleast it's stock. I wonder if there is even a section in this forum of people with modded aftermarket scoops like these?

you can offer $200 all day long, and nobody will bite, but there will be that very very rare person that wants to get rid of their scoop. If you want a real scoop on a budget, certifit scoops are about $100 and you can pick them up, gotta order the toyota insert parts about $150 for 3 things, and you're lookin at $250 before paint

didn't realize you had a 2012, was still looking at ur 06 in your profile, not sure if certifit makes a 2012 hood yet, but it's worth a call

 

I don't think that you will ever be truly satisfied until you get a factory scooped hood.
