Complete Clean

My Tacoma is the first vehicle I've ever had that had a paint job worth putting the effort into maintaining. (Before this my rides were new to me by half decade or more with poorly maintained paint.)

To keep paint looking the best how often should I wash? (I'm about once a week right now, or more often if there's a lot of dirt or mud). Also, how often should I wax?

My main question would be what all should a complete wash/wax include? I know the basics of washing, but what about clay bar, compounds, and polish?

I've done a little googling, but would definitely appreciate the input of someone with some real detailing experience.

Welcome to TW man! Glad to hear you got something you're proud enough to upkeep ha there is a thread in this section (Detailing) called "Official Ask a Detailer thread" or something along those lines. There are a TON of good tips and tricks, when and how often, and what products to use, etc in there. that would probably be a great place to start

Keep in mind, the more you wash, the more you put fine scratches in your clear coat. So, I recommend only washing when necessary. When washing, blast the dirt off with a pressure washer, then pressure soap, then only scrub the really dirty areas with a brush/wash mitt, whatever...

Typically waxing can be done up to a couple times a year (depending on where you live, and how anal you are...) I wax once/year after a polish. That's it. I know of others that wax monthly... Your call. Just remember that there isn't much clear coat on these trucks, so don't go polish-crazy, as you can burn through the clear.

 

As a self proclaimed "clean freak", I say that on these newer paints that use clear coat, you do not need wax. I use good soap such as Eagle, turtle, Mequires, etc. I try to get one with a wax or sealant included. I also use a Wax as you Dry type product. (Eagle and Turtle both have good ones). Lastly, I use a spray silicon type protector with a terry cloth to detail. That is three layers of protection in about 30 minutes. Feel free to stop by the house, I will wash it for you.
