Nephew looking for truck

My wife's sister's 15 year old is already looking for a truck. He's made comments about when he gets his license/truck it's muddin' every weekend. He's been posting on FB about what to get when he already has his mind made up. His dad has a F350 diesel 4x4 and that is what he wants. His friends suggested a Raptor. But realistically he says he'll have to "settle" for a F150 4x4, preferably a King Ranch. They are Ford people. Should I say anything to him about if he wants a "muddin" truck to get something smaller like a Taco or Jeep? I'm not that close to them as I have married into the family for just a few years now. I know if I do I'll be wasting my breath anyway. His oldest brother has a F150 4x4 also. They have a good deal on $ since his dad has his own business so there ain't no telling what he'll wind up with. But what is a 15/16 year old really gonna do with a F350 anyway? I guess he has the "bigger is better" mentality. So I'm just waiting on the day to hear sh*t about how my little Toyota can't hang.

They already come off as if they are better. My wife and her sister don't get along very good. Her sister act's like we're not good enough. I picked up on this early on when we were first dating. At least this is how I feel. My wife pretty much feels the same, like nothing we do is important enough and doesn't compare to them. So I kinda feel like it's gonna hit from the boys about the trucks eventually. Maybe I should challenge them to a trail run?

Anyway I'm just kinda venting since I see so many on the road riding me as to say "get a real truck" and now it looks like my 15 yr old nephew is already at that frame of mind. I don't really care what they think of my ride but would love to have the day of cruising through something that their "big" trucks cant.

 

thats the way to prove it. narrow small trail ride weaving in and out of trees lead them through some stuff and lyao when they cant make it! then leave them there to fend for themselves. sit back in your chair watching tv with a hot cup of cocoa and relax knowing you have the better truck(and they're stuck in the woods somewhere probably fighting cougars)

 

Kids with their parents buying them their trucks usually go for the bigger is better mentality. I knew a kid in HS, dad bought him a F350 Super Cab long bed Diesel, lifted about 8" at least, never saw anything but pavement, but he wanted the huge truck because "it could do way more than" my stock '97 Sierra.

 

Was also referring about how their heavier truck would sink in any soft surface so much easier.

And probably never did.

 

I would just sit back and watch it all unfold and be there for when he needs to be towed out of the mud

 

I wanted a yota ever since I was about 10. Always planned on getting a first gen, until time came to buy and I got a killer deal on my second gen.

 

My choice for a "new driver"-Toyota pick-up--Pre-tacoma!(late 80's -early 90's) Older trucks are tough as nails-can take the abuse and will not break the bank.
4cly will be decent MPG. They are easy to modify. parts are easy to find.( at least in East TN)
Insurance! Pay cash-get liabilty. Full coverage for a new driver is INSANE.

 

What does insurance cost for a kid. Not to mention who is paying for it.
My dad went half for my first car. Dodge Dart sport but he said you're doing the maintenance, gas and insurance. Lessons only learned the hard way.
My BIL had a 83 SR-5. I thought it was cooler than shit compared to his 77 F-250

This is my way of thinking. A new inexperienced driver doesn't need all that power to start out anyway imho.
