Pointless?

I have a 2010 tacoma 4x4 sr5, the thing is it's a 4banger. is it pointless for me to put bigger wheels and tires and lift it a bit?

 

No. If you can afford it why not... it is 4x4 right? Putsome new shoes on and take it to the mud and trails. If you never plan on ever using 4x4 and its your daily driver then yes IMO its pointless.

 

Some of the guys here in AZ have 4bangers and you'd be shocked on what they can get up and over. If you wheel a lot, go for it. If you daily drive, don't waste the cash.

Lifting a Smart Car and putting big tires is pointless. On your truck it's not, do it up!

 

Dont forget, guys were putting 33s on trucks with the 22RE engines back in the 80s, those trucks hauled and off roaded just fine.

 

Why would engine size make it pointless to get a lift? The point of lifting is fitting larger tires and increased ground clearance.

 

Or 37's. Keep it mild, or re-gear accordingly, and you'll be OK. Better than OK actually.

 

You're good...as long as you'll use it it isn't pointless...

 

It's not pointless, but having a 4 banger means that such changes will have potentially greater consequences. Most any activity that requires power from your truck will demand a gearing change. Tires without gears can also wreak havoc with fuel economy. Bigger tires weigh more, whcih will also tax the engine. Generally a bigger tire will require slightly lower final gearing than stock to compensate the weight. Do you tow? Do you live at higher altitude? Do you care about performance at all? Some people don't as long as they look good. All things to consider.

I would do some research and some thinking before jumping to do this. You could end up causing a problem that will demand yet another big lay out in cash that you did not budget.

As far as the 22RE with bigger tires, the ones without gearing could be passed by a volkswagon bus on any discernable grade.

my reg cab was a beast with a 3" lift and 285s, but got worse gas mileage than my current Dcab TRD OR, prob because it worked double overtime lol..

 

I had 35s with 4:10s in my 22r....fawking gutless but it did the job offroad. Only could hit 50 on the highway..downhill

 

You should see what some of us retards have done to our 2.7L, 5 lug trucks. Do as you please.

 

22r was 80 horses from the factory

 

Oh god...only gear I DIDN'T bog down in, was 1st gear 4low

 

Back in the day I had a 1986 GMC Jimmy with 33s. It had the 305 v8 but it was only 155hp and around 244ft lbs torque, weighed almost 1000lbs more than your 4-banger truck, and did fine but was a slug. It's a tradeoff. But you will be badass.

 

I'm running 32" Hankook Dynapro ATM's with the truck leveled out using the Bilstein 5100's. Personally I love the look and the truck still has plenty of get up and go.
