Actually I have used a small craftsman compressor that was only a 8 gallon tank before. An impact gun doesn't require huge amounts of air to operate. Well, until you get into the 3/4 inch and 1 inch variety! lol.

1/2" and below is only going to require about 90 psi @ 4-5cfm just about anything other than a pancake compressor can do that easily, and even a pancake can run it pretty well just have to wait between long bursts to build air back up. but anyway unless you have just an absolutely pathetic compressor you will actually run into more starvation of air problems by not running the porper size lines or running 1/4" fittings on 3/8" line long before you run into the compressor not keeping up as long as you give it time to cycle. ran all my tools off my old pc pancake for about 2 years before i got my new one. and it did just fine just had to wait for it to cycle a few too many times for my liking so i got a 21 gal and said heck with it.

Of course with the bigger shop, I required a bigger compressor..... So I have this:

Not a photo of the actual compressor I have, but it looks exactly like it, and is the same brand and model size.

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.

    This.

If i'm going to buy a compressor, I don't want to upgrade it in a few years. I want to be able to run an impact wrench actually capable of 300-400 ft-lbs. Most require about 6 cfm @ 90 psi. I would like to actually be able to run other tools like grinders and spray guns in the future as well. so about 10 cfm is what I'm looking at. No money's for it right now anyways. Probably a year or so down the road and I'll have one. Besides, my garage right now is so small that my elantra would have to squeeze to fit in there even without all my tools.

There was a crazy deal on one of these on craigslist about 2 weeks ago. It was still in the factory plastic wrap.

I wish I had known. I would have bought it for nothing more than having a backup compressor!

That price is actually a decent price for a new one. I have found them at different distributors for $1400 new. I would have loved to get that.

im confused what guns you are looking at? i have a 1/2" IR that when turned up will hit or jump slightly over 600ft/lbs and it only requires like 4.7cfm @90 most all the spray guns i have used or been around dont operate on 90 psi and will norm go around 40psi and then will have a cfm req of like 6-7cfm. im just curious as to which style/type of guns and impacts you were looking at. our biggest compressor at teh quarry without going into a 1" line only does like 8 or so cfm at 90psi and it is a 2 stage compressor.

I haven't chose a specific impact wrench, just assuming about 6 @ 90, some work with less cfm @ 130 range. It's safe to assume about 8 for grinders, and about 9-12 for spray guns (some @ 40psi, some higher). Regardless, I haven't researched real deep into air stuff yet, just the minor requirements. However, I've researched enough to know I can't afford a half way decent set up yet haha. I'd like to have about 1-1.5k into a compressor and a few tools when I actually set one up.

 holy crap guess you are gonna make my stuff look bush league........ wow. but i guess as long as my tinker toys do the job its good enough for me. i dont see me getting to crazy on the compressed air side of things. wont be sprayin anymore cars or any thing like that so it should do........ plus i plan to put my money into welders and a lift along with other big pro shop tools. if i ever get a shop of my own.

I'm just guessing 400-500 compressor, and probably 500 for impact wrench, ratchet, chisel, etc.

I never really needed air tools on the tacoma, but this jeep is a different story. I've only met a few "non-bitch" bolts, and those were the u-joint strap bolts.

you planin on goin all snap on or matco? just wondering cuz you could even get a complete setup on IR for a bit less than i believe you are expecting costs. unless you are just preparing your bank account for when you go into the tool store and see a lot more tools that "you didnt even know you needed til you saw them in the store" in which case i totally understand.

Don't be snarky. I didn't say I'm dropping 1-1.5k all at once. If I'm buying a compressor, its for life, so yes =~ 500 at once for compressor, probably about 200 range for impact wrench, 150ish for ratchet. That alone, before tax and what not is just below 1k. That doesn't even take into account hose or any of the possible filters/traps.

Snap-on or matco would be in the 1k range for just an impact wrench and ratchet.

lulz @ compressor talk. Justin, I hear ya on needing the flow, but I kinda see where Paul is coming from. He and I seem to see eye to eye on the, "buy once, cry once" kind of mentality, which... sigh... isn't great for ye olde' bank account.

I told my entire family I wanted Home Depot gift cards for Christmas and birthday (got some as wedding presents as well) the year we bought our house, and hard plumbed (galvanized) a 60 gal husky in my basement with a 50' hose. I figure it oughta last me at LEAST 15-20 years with basic maintenance. I have yet to run across something it won't run. My die grinder is pretty air hungry, so it runs a good bit, but it keeps up for the most part. I haven't done any sand blasting though. That's probably past what it'll push. Granted, it's no IR or screw compressor craziness, but it gets the job done.

I did cheap on the tools. All of my air tools are HF or Tractor Supply Chinese specials, but they seem to work just fine. I kinda ran out of dough after buying the galvanized. :(

If we're getting snarky... (;)) go check out garagejournal.com. THOSE assholes are insane.

I may not be certified, but I'm certifiable. Does that count?
