Buddy, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder, which isn't related to this discussion. This thread is about the filthy rich - the top 5% another mentioned. That means the billionaires and the millionaires approaching that, not the small businessman you keep bringing up.

As for your "Occupy Wall Street text book" garbage, my ideas for possible solutions are far from that. Darn few of the Occupy Wall Street crowd would be arguing against immigration, for example. As for my education, it's just fine, thank you.

I'm confused about these high taxes people are talking about. Did you forget to hire a tax attorney?

Both Toyota and Mercedes have to pay substantial import duties, while American corporations with factories overseas don't or don't pay nearly as much.

MORE TAX REVENUE - when will it ever end OZ? We're a country of credit... more ya make more ya spend... Presidents don't get ellected by talking about cutting programs or by talking about raising taxes - American's want to take a pill and make it all better - or raise taxes and kick the can down the road! The issue my friend is entitlement programs and illegal immigration in my state and for the country as a whole. Raising taxes is never a solution, especially with a recessed economy

Because of the UAW it is much more expensive to manufacture GM cars than foreign makes in this country - I mention the amount of property tax I pay because it gives my frustration some credence. Despite the economic downturn - my property taxes have steadily rose - you'd be equally frustrated

FWIW , this thread was a tongue in cheek response to the Universities / Churches / Pets / MJP should pay taxes threads from yesterday , however , in the meantime some interesting discussion has occured , which is always healthy.

I do think that the US is headed in the direction of many European countries that have recently been forced to deal with their debt issues through deep and painful austerity measures .

Tax reform , raising taxes , cutting spending , it all needs to happen to some degree in order to deal with the situation , and as was stated previously , everyone must have a stake , however , the mood of many in this thread seems to be " every man for himself " , and I'm not sure that is going to cut it .

Mods , feel free to delete this thread if you want , or leave it open for more discussion , I care not

Millionaires are not the 5% - you lumped them into your Occupy style statement.

Wouldn't discussion of the subject be so much more productive without the " socialist , Occupy , Canadianism " BS labels ?

Or is that not possible ?

Original thread quote OZ - typical to back pedal in an attempt to mask a ridiculous over generalized statement - Also coming from a Canadian, I felt the need to enlighten. This is a mentality that will not solve our problem - we will solve it - America always comes through and in the end we'll be stronger for it. Through our rugged individualism we will thwart the socialist movement in this country and avoid what you say is inevitable.

This is absolutely correct. We could make huge strides in greatly reducing taxes if we ended ~99% of these unwanted and unneeded programs. Taking money (by force) out of one person's pocket and putting it into another person's pocket is a crime.

Okay, Gary. Whatever. I've repeatedly explained my comment. If you don't want to accept that, fine. I've got other things to do today, so will end my involvement in this discussion here.

There was an intersting graphic somewhere that showed how much money it actually took to run the government, and then how much was set aside for entitlement programs. That was compared with how much money we actually take in via tax revenue.

Needless to say...there is plenty of money there to run this country.
