Hard to avoid a political discussion, isn't it? Okay, I'll try to walk a thin line here. Medicare and Medicaid have been around my entire life, thus not much of a current political issue. Obamacare is new (during my watch) and literally heaped in divisive social politics (social engineering, etc). I could get into details, but that would likely be taking it too far. Same with any response to the other things you mention.

It was an honest question, and I'm admittedly surprised by the honesty of your answer -- you're upset about the current news because there has been coverage telling you that you should be upset about the current news.

The exact same items are already in place and have been for your entire life, but they're of no concern because nobody is saying that they're a horrible thing. When those programs were first implemented, the rhetoric was exactly the same as what many outlets are pushing today, but in the end it did nothing to ruin society or the country as a whole.

There's no social engineering going on. There are simply a lot of sick people without coverage who, by law, get treated regardless of their insurance situation. They are are a burden on the healthcare system that needs to be addressed. At present, those additional costs are factored into the premiums paid by those that do have health insurance. If you have insurance, you are already paying for the uninsured.

The goal is to remove those outliers from the equation by pulling them into the fold and having them contribute to the pool. As a business model, insurance only works if people that do not need it still buy in.

The system being implemented was originally proposed in 1989 and was openly supported by industry and by many of today's most vocal detractors:

In reference to your first post from the previous page, this is how a topic can be discussed without becoming political. State facts, discuss objectively, and leave the anger at the door. There should be nothing adversarial about a simple conversation.

This topic in particular is primarily concerning business anyway.

You, sir, know how to address a political issue. If we were all like you, political discussions would not only be allowed here, they'd be encouraged. Sadly, that is not the way things usually go.

...and he basically proved my point as well... it can be done, ...the key is to punish the ones that get out of hand (personal attacks, etc...), ..rather than a blanket punishment of everyone in the class because a few troublemakers... as i said before, i'm part of the modstaff on another forum, that is ingrained in politics, ...although we don't allow personal attacks - we go after the offenders, ..it works quite well...

i see a lot of threads on TW, especially in "Off Topic" where you have personal attacks, lots of cursing (even in thread titles), etc, w/out any real "politics" involved.... asshattery isn't a subset of political debate.... my forum is more polite/cleaner, all the while being politics-centric...

Then go discuss it on your forum. I'm not sure why you insist this is a punishment - You are welcome to discuss politics anywhere else you want but here. That is hardly a punishment...but it does avoid a near 100% topic locking, member banning issue and stems the genesis of a majority of personal grudge matches on the site.
As far as the other off topic threads - Expect to see a change in the tolerance level for those shenanigans as well.
