Switched to Castrol Syntec 0w30 for winter, back to 5w30 when spring rolls around. I was using GTX before, the truck loves the switch to synthetic.

I don't care if it "can last _____" I change my oil every 5000km regardless, I do re-use it for things around my shop though.

My 2011 had Conventional Oil and they recommended that I switch to synthetic after 16,000 KM.

No reason to wait unless you prefer to do more frequent intervals on a new engine.

Synthetic is not "more slippery" and won't interfere with break-in. It is simply better in all aspects. It is more shear-stable due to reduced viscosity improvers, it resists sludge formation at high temperatures, and it provides better cold-flow performance upon engine start.

There is no reason not to want all 3 of those and every reason to want them on any engine.

Wow first post is a poll on oil. I think every forum on the internet has an oil debate. Good luck, cause the ford, chevy, nissan, whatever car forum will probably have a different view.
The key is make sure you change it regularly whatever you use.

    Useless as a consumer-added additive.

Zinc levels have been reduced in API SJ and later oils, but adding it is not going to help.

    Why is that?

The fork shop mechanic I worked under a few summers ago said he ran some non zddp oil in some of the 4 banger clarks when they switched over to low % zddp and the engines went early compared to others. So for that reason we ran 15w40 in all of em. We had a lot and they got run hard, and had a lot of hours in a DE processing plant and that shit is nasty.

Anyway, I've always wondered about the stuff. I knew they pulled it out of gas engine oils for emission reasons.

    edited to explain more

ZDDP is a very effective friction reducer, but a couple of things:

It's a last line of defense - By the time the zinc is "working", the rest of the oil's additive package and film strength is no longer doing it's job.
As a consumer additive... like most consumer additives... it's worthless.
It needs to be properly added and blended when the oil is produced.

Yes, it's been reduced on modern oils in decreasing levels for the last 10 years.
No... running the non-ZDDP oil is not what caused those engines to go... they were on their way out already.
Like you said... they get run hard.

I'm not worried about the Tacoma at any rate. Just something to BS about.

Other... which means whichever synth Advance Auto has with their "oil change special" that week. Mobil1, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol... it's all the same to me (and my truck) as long as it comes with a decent filter.
