This breaks my heart. This fire is burning outside Boulder, CO. The pic is taken looking southwest toward Boulder from my hometown; this was pretty much the view from my front door growing up. I have a couple friends in Boulder whose homes are being threatened, pre-evacuation notices have been issued for thier neighborhoods.

And I cancelled my vacation plans for Colorado, given that the friend I was going to stay with may have to evacuate. I'm going to Oklahoma instead to visit my parents after my well is done.
    So... to lighten the mood:

The people that fight forrest fires out west are some pretty amazing people. When I was in high school the mountain around my hometown was set on fire by some local idiots and it got way too far out of hand for our forestry department so there were fire fighters from out west, Arizona I think, flown in to help contain it. IIRC it was contained and put out not very long after they got here. Extraordinary people. Its very sickening to see the pictures everyone is putting up. My thoughts are with anyone that has been or will potentially be affected.

My dad was a crew boss for Colorado State Forest Service fire fighting team, and then he was an assistant district forester (that's basically 2nd in command at their office) when he wasn't fighting fires. They went everywhere, all over the US and even occasionally Canada, they would fly firefighters wherever they were needed. My favorite story was during the Yellowstone fires in I think 1988 they sent his boss to Yellowstone to help there. In the meantime a fire broke out right in their home district; in fact they used the forest service office as the fire camp because the fire was literally on the hill behind the office. So dad's boss was sitting in a motel in Montana watching the news and what's he see? Pictures of his own office, fire raging in the background.

My dad also has a little blob of metal, oval shaped and about the size of a decent hamburger, that he found out in the woods during a fire. It's what was left of the engine block of a Porsche after a forest fire was done with it. He tells people he owns a Porsche now. ;)

I feel your pain. I grew up camping all over MT and every summer a fire or pine beetles or some other natural disaster comes through and wipes out the forest. Nothing looks the way it used to when I was a kid, makes me sad. :(
Sorry about your vacation, try to make the most of it regardless of where you end up!

And that second pic looks like Yellowstone. People are stupid. Never ceases to amaze me how incredibly dumb people can be.

Yep, that was '88. And FWIW those fires consumed nearly 800,000 acres

Or perhaps nothing when you were a kid looked the way it used to, before or after. The world is constantly changing. Nothing to truly be sad about.

Discovered a couple of interesting areas today...

First a natural fireplace and chimney. This area is popular with snowmobilers....they seem to like to build fires at the base of this formation (hence the black discoloration on some of the rocks). There are 3 natural caves/openings in the rocks.

And this rock seems to have tumbled 180* from the left.
