Trying for the TX Baja

So ive been Looking at buying the 2012 Tacoma TX BAJA DC fully loded with entune and navigation. It Also has all weather floor mats and the Hood shield deflector.
After dealing for a a while the best i could get 36k even befor taxes.

How do you think the price is?

 

if you're going to wheel, save some coin and go with SR5 or TRD OR, use the money you save on not getting the baja for making your truck better than the baja for less money, if you're buying for the rims, vinyl decals, and "upgraded bilsteins", then go for it

Well there's an issue with buying a TRD for me and upgrading it.
I'm a full time college student and I work full time in the coal mines...I don't have the cash readily available to spend on upgrades the only way I can afford it is by financing.

 

And also factory warranties are nice

 

Because the Baja is relatively in short supply, dealers know this. They're going to take advantage of this. You may still want to look around a bit more before making the leap. But honestly, 36K doesn't surprise me if it's got all the bells and whistles. If you end up doing the deal, maybe get them to throw in some other goodies. You never know until you ask. Good luck! BTW, full-time (tough) job and full-time college... good for you! Work hard, play hard, and reap the $$$ benefits later.

 

I was originally looking at the Baja too, so I delayed my TRD OR order, bad move, the transmission on my xB's tranny blew up so I was stuck sharing a car to go to work along with my sister who just got her license, and my mother, whenever she came back to town.

Well, at any rate, I put the order through ASAP but I was fortunate enough to find out the dealer already had an allotment for one but was early enough in the process to change the configuration to V6 Acess Cab TRD OR w/ Manual Transmission. A similar model for the Baja would have cost another 6k.

I decided to spend the saved 6K on other stuff like shrockworks bumpers and rock sliders.

So long story short, order has been made. Build date was June 18th, and I'm looking at delivery this week or the following.

This will be the 7th Toyota in our immediate family, the first being a truck.

I really wanted to wait for a 2014 DI Engine or the D4D to somehow make it to our shores, but I just figure, if I buy the truck now, I can always swap in a motor whenever they show up.

It's a pipe dream, but the direct injection is more of a reality.

If it all doesn't work, I can go for whatever small 4-6 cylinder diesel that shows up in the 2014/2015.

For example, the Nissan Cummins is working together on a 2.8L Diesel which is going under certification and Dodge is testing a RAM 1500 with a VM Motori.

So maybe. If any of these are released in California, they'll be eligible as a legal swap.

 

I didn't say I had no money I said I don't have 5k just lying around to spend on mods...I'm putting a 10k down payment on it.

Oh and btw go work at a coal mines and see how well it's works out driving a commuter car across the mountain on rough dirt roads everyday

Sounds like you're set on the Baja and if you're happy with what it is for 35 then fly at it.

Sometimes people come across a bit preachy on here but it's all to be helpful. You can by a Trd or and upgrade for cheaper... And likely end up with a "better" functioning truck for wheeling.

Just a thought but if you are putting 10k down then you do have the cash for mods. If you save 5k by getting the or then you only have to put 5k down and you're financing the same amount. (less if you factor in the taxes on the lower price). Then you have your remaining 5k for mods.

 

Well the lower the payments I can get the better...Idc if I buy a single cab 4 cyl I'm goinna put all 10k down on it. Because I would prefer the lower payments so that I'm safe if the economy takes a shit. And tbh I don't want to put all this aftermarket stuff on my truck then get all these vibrations and issues that a lot of people get

 

X2 - save your money and buy a house before you buy a 40k depreciate asset.

OP, your hard work = your hard-earned money = whatever you damn well want to buy. It's a free country... I say go for it.

I'd say anyone who is putting himself through college full-time and is also able to work a full-time job should enjoy the fruits of his labors. Everyone here has brought up valid concerns but this is based on their own experience... but it's your life, your rules. So if you think this is a wise decision for you, go for it and screw everyone else. As far as price goes, as I said above, the Baja's are a hot commodity right now regardless of what some may think about them. You're going to pay more than you might pay a year from now. Hell, it's only $35K... a risk but not a substantial one.

BTW, what is your field of study? What do you hope to do upon graduation?

IMO buying brand new vehicles is a complete waste of money. They are just too expensive and not worth it. What everyone is telling you is probably the best bet for the situation you are in. If you have 10k right now, then buy a slightly used ones for 26-29k, put down about 6500 and spend the rest on some good coil overs and good rear shocks and maybe a cool front bumper and for less money you will have a far better, more capable, better riding, more bad ass rig than you would if you bought a brand new baja. The "baja" is just a fancy package and a way to get people like you to waste extra money to walk out of the stealership with a cooler looking truck, not realizing you can make it much better if you do the work on it.

As far as a warranty, yes they are nice, but on a newer tacoma you don't need to worry about mechanical problems or shit breaking very much as they are very reliable trucks. If you do, then thats just a good excuse to work on your truck and get to know it better. And as far as the vibes and "lift problems" go if you put on a good lift (like coil overs) you wont have problems. It's when you do it half ass you have problems. Tons and tons of people lift their rigs with zero issues. Good luck on what ever decision you go with.

 

Im currently working on getting a 4 year degree in Electrical Engineering.
I work for Patriot coal as an apprentice electrician. Hopefully in the future I can work my way into GM or or chief position. Unless the coal market flops, then if that happens ille take whatever comes way that pays the best and enjoy the most.

To be honest here in WV there is nothing that pays as good as the mines so i hope to stay with the company im at for a long time.

 

Buying a used tacoma here isnt a very good idea due to the resale value where I live. (I know its high anywhere) but its extremely high here so I really wouldnt save as much money as you might think.
