$650 isn't bad if that's with parts cost.

At 180k...mine will need a new one soon.

Make sure they throw in a new TOB and rear main seal while the are at it.

Well about two weeks after i traded my old pickup that i SAS'd (build threads on yotatech) i was at a red light about to turn green and i put her in 1st and the truck started vibrating somewhat extreme and it shut off. And since then its been getting near impossible to put in gear

When was that? I'm not having any trouble getting it into gear yet...sometimes kinda hard to get it into reverse...but nothing major. It just doesn't feel as strong as it used to be.

Hard to get into gear is usually just a hydraulic problem, easy and cheap to fix and doesn't require pulling the trans. If it slips that is a sign that the clutch needs replacement.

All the hydraulics have been replaced, but it may need to be bled better

9 times out of 10 there is no issue getting it into gear.

you're fine, mine does the same thing. Reverse has no syncro so it will be hard to engage from time to time.

    thats good to hear.

Maybe its just in my head.

I replaced the gl-5 amsoil that been in it for 70k miles and put in some sta-lube gl4 till I get get ahold of some mt90 and its been better.

I just hope that the gl-5 fluid didn't eat at my synchros too much.

Is there anything in the t-case that would be hurt by gl-5 fluid?

And then there was Ol' Red....

Went wheeling and camping up the Middle St Vrain yesterday and today.

Aired down right at the trail head using my buddies compressor. He drives a 72(?) K5 Blazer on 37s... he's sunk about $35,000 into this rig (has a 96 corvette engine in it, etc...) Waited for my other buddy and his family to show up in his huge Dodge diesel rig. And then there was Ol' Red....

Right off the bat the first obstacle was different. Quite challenging in the 18 years I've gone here prior... but it was seriously jacked up yesterday (and today). I have no idea what changed about it so much but it was so much gnarlier. The normal line I would take was not available anymore. It was unrecognizable to me. So my buddy in his huge blazer goes first. Gets serious hung up three times. Bad line for sure but his rig usually plows over a lot. After about 4 violent bucks he finally throttles out. Then my buddy in his Dodge goes through and immediately destroys a nerf bar. I told him that's nature's way of telling him they're gay.

And then there's Ol' Red.... I had to make a "z" to get through this obstacle but slow, in low, and smooth he gets through. Just one shot to my frame. No big deal.

We drive about 200 yards before we realize my buddy's Dodge has a huge tear in his sidewall. Takes us about 15 minutes to change the tire with a bottle jack. While we're doing that a 3 truck posse passed us (an awesome SAS Toyota rock rig, a beautiful 01-04 Tacoma, Matt from Erie, and a Cherokee built for trails). A guy who struggled to get over that first obstacle ended up trailing with him... a Jeep Rubicon, slightly modded.

The next 1/4 mile is pretty mellow before you get into some gnarlier stuff. I could tell a lot of these boulders and obstacles are considerably harder/different than last year. Maybe last year's run off affected it?

The 3 truck posse get over the next major obstacle no problem. The Jeep Rubicon struggles mightily, my buddy's K5 plows over it as well as my buddy's Dodge. Then there's Ol' Red... slowly picking his way through the lines. Slow, and in low, crawling up and making it seem easy.

We drive about 50 yards and the Rubicon's front axle breaks. He's fucked. After assessing everything, he says he's going to limp it back to the trail head and call for a flat bed. We wish him luck and move on.

We don't see the 3 truck posse any more, they left the scene before we did.

Three more intense obstacles. On the second one my buddy's K5's rear drive shaft busts off. The whole coupler (u-joints?) that holds it to the rear axle is shattered into pieces. He's a front wheel drive (locked) rig from now on. My buddy's Dodge proceeds to shove his passenger side nerf bar into his rocker panel/door. Then there's Ol' Red. Nimbly making his way up the obstacle with the driver's side wheels crawling over the huge rocks and the passenger side wheels in a rut. No one took this line, they tried muscling their way over way too many rocks. But Ol' Red slow, and in low, just crawled his way through.

We bounce/crawl another 1/4 mile and see a lifted Jeep Wrangler pulled off on the side of the trail. Busted rear axle. He's totally fucked. We're all talking for awhile and he starts asking me about my Tacoma. He's asking me about the suspension. I tell him it's all stock. I show him my rear leafs that are severely frowning at this point with some weight in the back. He doesn't believe me it's stock and that I had no trouble getting to this point. I told him this is pretty tame for a stock Tacoma. He asked me how many miles I have on it. I tell him 152,000 miles. He asks how much maintenance went into it. I told him routine. Never had to replace anything, ever. Last thing he asks is, "what's the best year for a Tacoma, I'm getting one."

We move on and get to our camp spot. Spend the night and decide, the next morning, to go wheeling to a trail head and then go for a hike. On our way up the trail is literally a creek. Surprisingly there was a ton of run off running down the trail. My friend's busted K5 is having a hard time getting up the watery trail (pretty steep incline with nothing but rocks) in his now FWD truck. My buddy's Dodge does okay but his ass end keeps sliding out for some reason. Then there's Ol' Red. Just chuckling at the other trucks' struggles.

After a nice hike we head down back to camp. My buddies in the K5 and Dodge are going to spend another night, but I have to head down. So I have to air back up at camp and make the trek back, fully inflated, alone. On the way down Ol' Red really showed his stuff. Making his way down these gnarly obstacles fully inflated was highly impressive. The worst one... was made even harder by a Land Cruiser half on the trail, half off the trail, with two busted axles (my only pic, lol). It's like serious carnage out here... like a scene out of Mad Max. Unfortunately the Cruiser is blocking the best line, so there's Ol' Red making his way down this serious crux. At one point the passenger side front tire and the driver's side rear were both off the ground. I had to buck it a few times in order for the rear tire to finally make enough contact to shove me through the obstacle.

Slowly we make our way back to the trail head and the first obstacle. There's a line of trucks waiting to get out, and get in, because there is an Xterra high centered and stuck on that gnarly opening obstacle. A truck behind him dragged him off and allowed everyone down trail to make their way up. Some really sweet rigs including a rock rig Toyota and an old school CJ5. I'm first in line to make my way down and the CJ stops and asks, "have you ever been up here before?" I say, "yeah." He asks, "have you been over this (obstacle) before?" (the trail is a loop so it's a legitimate question). I answer "yeah." He says, "I have see this." WTF? Like I need pressure?

So there's Ol' Red... I see a much better line going down but knew I had to lock up the rear. Again, another hardcore/sharp "z" pattern only this time my driver's side rear wheel is about 2.5 feet off the ground because so many people dug out that spot in the past day. I can't get it to go forward. So I have to rock the hell out of the truck on some serious rocks until I see the rear wheel drop far enough on to the ground... once it hits, throttle out, pop on to the last three remaining rocks and slowly creep off the backside of them.

As I clear the obstacle for the others to come down, the guy in the Xterra says, "wtf? that's stock?" I say, "yup... 152,000 miles and still drives like new."

    And then there's Ol' Red.
