How does 4x4 work?

I'm familiar with AWD systems and how they work but I just never figured out how 4WD worked. That 4AWD sticker really threw me off. lol
I'm slowly getting how 4WD works though and I got stupid friends that are telling me you can use it anywhere. Then I told them some of this and they still didn't believe me...oh well, let's see what happens to them.

 

I'm sure there are a lot of people who ride around in 4WD on pavement and in places they shouldn't. And perhaps your buddies haven't had any problems and they might not ever have any problems.

It's a rule of thumb....

But....if you're a true auto enthusiast who knows the possibilities of what 'could' occur.... you avoid using 4WD on pavement and you learn about how to use it wisely. Because afterall.... these trucks are our 'babies' and we like to make sure they stay healthy.

 

It's magic! And the trucks with magic 4x4 come with special mudflaps to let everyone else kn ow it's a magic truck! And not all trucks are magic.

So what models have limited slips.. in my sr5 i can't turn when in 4x4.. i think the trd's you can?

For what its worth...The inlaws have a 08 blazer....

The 4wd switch has 4 settings on it....2wd....awd....4hi....4lo

You kick it in AWD and it acts like a limited slip...The front wheels only engage when you need them...

Then you have the reg 4hi and 4 lo which were explained earlier...

So generally speaking, with both vehicles having the same tires and similar design, what will handle better in snow/ice, 4x4 or AWD?

 

You can't "generally speaking" that question- The driver matters so much more than the type of drive...imho.

 

Well yeah obviously, but you could say that an experienced guy in a FWD car can do better in snow than a dummy in 4x4...it still doesn't mean FWD is better in snow.

Im just wondering if there's any benefits to one over the other when it comes to handling in snow and ice.

 

The best way to explain the difference between AWD and 4WD is: AWD has a center Differential that allows the front and rear tires to spin @ different speeds.

Also not sure about you 2nd gen Trucks but in the Chain driving manual Tcases. you can shift into 4HI up to about 65Mph. and Low moving under 5mph. Iv also never had a problem running 4lo up to around 45-50Mph well basically thats the max speed.

 

So you can run it whenever then?
