5w-20 seemed to help quiet the engine tick as well. At least to me.

After trying several weights over the years and at 318,000 miles I'm sticking with 10-30

So what does every one thing of 0-40 Mobil 1 DelVac ESP.. I think the higher detergent level will help with the sludge issues these trucks have been known to have..

    Thanks

My Toyota dealer put 5w-20 into my Rav4 V6 which is supposed to get 5w-30... That was fixed though, and now that the 'free' maintenance is done on that one, I'm changing that one myself

My 2000 Ranger was the first vehicle I had that insisted on a specific weight as opposed to a range. The service advisor agreed with me that you should be able to substitute 10-30, when the technician walking by went, "Nu-uh, not that truck...HAS to be (whatever)". Apparently it was one of the first engines Ford did that with, so the techs had double checked with Ford, and it was for as previously mentioned, tighter tolerances in newer vehicles. He said the biggest issue with thicker oil was it affected mileage.

At the end of the day, I'd complain to Toyota (which may or may not result in anything), and not take it back to the dealership ever again. I follow the manual, and don't deviate. While I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff, I also realise I run the risk of saying, "That doesn't make sense", only to later go, "Oh...now I understand". I might accept an explanation that makes sense from the dealership, but "We get a better price on it" ain't it.
