Loading a gun safe onto the tailgate OK?

Having a 500lb gun safe delivered soon. Instead of having the delivery guy lower it to the ground, I'd like to simply back my 2008 TRD up to the lift and have it lowered to the bed of my truck.

Should I worry about the tailgate supporting it for a few seconds until we can lay it down in the bed?

Would it be better to avoid the center part of the gate and have it placed on the side instead?

Hmmm, I appreciate that. I didn't know the tailgate came off easily. Is there a how-to in the owner's manual? I flipped through it for an hour or so when I bought the truck but don't recall seeing it mentioned.

Take the tailgate OFF...... and don't worry.

 

pop off the cables, close the tailgate to within a few inches of closed, and pull up on the passenger side. The hinge peg on that side is squared off and lines up with a notch on the tailgate. Once the passenger side is off, pull to the passenger side to get it off the driver side peg.

I would take the tailgate off, lay the safe down in the truck, and slide it into your bed. It would probably be easier (less lifting) and no worry about breaking the tailgate.

 

New guy here chiming in. DO NOT LOAD ANYTHING on that cheap a$$ flimsy tailgate. I had a ball & burlapped tree forked into the bed. I am pretty sure it didn't weigh 500lbs. When I got it home, it took 3 landscapers to roll it out and onto a wheelbarrow. As soon as they rolled it across the tailgate that damn thing folded like card. It's pretty flimsy. The composite inner surface has no strength and is only supported in a few places buy thin strips of sheet metal. You can remove the allen key bolts and see for yourself. I got a good look when I got the new tailgate since they come without the composite liner. Luckily that part popped back out or I would have had to buy that too. Only the outer sheet metal was kinked beyond repair. It was $230 for the tailgate and then another $200 to get it painted. Lesson learned.

 

I agree with ndcouch, I load a quad weekly riding right up on to the tailgate before pushing it into the back of the truck, do not worry about the weight, it will be fine, if you chosoe to take the tailgate off (I personally believe it is not necesary), it is extremely easy, try it before wasting time reading the manual. Have a look at it and you will see how it comes off!!

 

haha here is something i've done before! about a month ago i rested a 525lb gun safe on the tailgate while we lifted and slid it in, and i didn't have a problem with it. tailgate didn't sag or bend or anything so you should be fine, just do it fast. i also did it dozens of times with quads

 

There is a TSB. I have not wrecked mine.
As to a preivious post; I am packing an M9 with MIL Spec.Laser and Fed Hydro shocks at the moment.
I do not wish my weapons to be lonely.
The 1911`s get most of the attention. The 870 is always around. The SAA`s and other revolvers get some powder burnt. I used to pack a SAA as a duty weapon. Lawerence and Don Hume made the leather.
I only have so much time.

 

i live in WI so I can't even touch the Vehicle with the gun if its not in a case. TOTAL BS

 

I am also in WI right now. But I am exempt.
What Peace Officer does not cover the DoD does.
WI does not forbid MG`s. But does auto knives except for Mil.
Even civilian cops and EMT can`t pack them.
