Are cold air filters worth it?

A buddy of mine suggested I get a cold air filter for my 08 V6 extended cab to increase my gas milage. I did a little Google search and I'm wondering if spending 300+ bucks is worth it or not. (Cost vs return) Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

 

NO! The stock system is a cold air intake!

I have the TRD intake but it hasn't improved anything except made the truck much louder.

There are some that report some mpg gains, but from what I've seen, they are the minority. Seems a few more K&N users report mpg gains, but still a minority, and with the K&N it's not truely a CAI since it just has a fence between the filter and the engine bay, not a box.

 

Toku - haven't seen you on the forums in a while. When i first got my tacoma your posts helped me a lot.

So, is the TRD filter any better than stock or K&N filter? I was planning on just swapping filters. I was gung ho on a TRD intake, but all the reading here suggests its more of a show piece and stock is plenty good and using a better filter is all that is needed.

 

If you are getting increased air flow then you are getting decreased filtering capability. Stick with stock.

 

This thread was interesting reading. I was wondering about this topic myself. I put one on my 95' Taco but never noticed any difference either. But it was a 4cyl.

CAIs might increase horsepower slightly, but the trade off is a dirtier engine by most accounts. Warm air will increase fuel economy - not cold air. If you want MPG improvements, focus on your driving habits. More can be saved by paying attention to your vehicle.
