Sports vs Offroads

I am in the market for a 2012 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 but I have been noticing something at all the local Toyota dealers....

Normally they have 10 TRD Offroads and maybe 1 TRD Sport. Dealers are telling me Sports are more popular and usually sell as soon as they hit the lot. When I have been driving around I see far more Offroads then Sports. Really what is more popular here on Tacoma World? 50/50?

I personally lean towards the Sport model but it seems finding a 4x4 Doublecab short bed in my area is nearly impossible. Is Toyota not big on letting consumers order a vehicle cause the dealers here always went to dealer trade which is still pretty limited.

Some thoughts about Offroad vs Sport would be appreciated.

I got the best of both worlds. TRD Off Road with Sport hood.

Found a guy a few years ago to trade me hoods

 

The Sport has the colour matched trim and hoodscoop and is available in AC , DCSB and DCLB

The Offroad has chrome grille and rear bumper , no scoop , is available in AC and DCSB only , and has a rear locker and the 4x4 models have ATRAC

also IBDK

 

I bought one that was a good price, and purchased a painted grille later on. It happened to be the offroad, but i didn't like the chrome grille. Still haven't used the locker. I could live with either one.

 

i like the scoop, but like the e-locker alot more.

 

The popular option around here seems to be offroad guys that have hood scoop envy!

 

I needed the off road for Max traction right from day one. Sooooo it was DCSB for me. Now with soon to be a family of four I'd do the Sport with a Long bed today.

The Sport has a 8.4" rear the Offroad 8". I have read the Sport is much stronger but no e-locker.

I don't plan on doing any real off roading in mine. Is it possible to retro fit the e locker in the future to the sport?

I also have e-locker envy. Although I've yet to get stuck in my Sport. I say it comes down to the driver...and how u approach ur terrain. But I gotta say I also love all the color matched features, scoop and blinkers on side mirrors.

 

It was in a 4x4 magazine last year. It had a white All Pro Tacoma.

The color matched bumpers are what I like better, chrome just doesn't flow aswell .

i have black OR and the chrome looks SWEET. it simply looks more trucky.. color matched well it looks good but thats for cars. dont know why everyones so turned off by the chrome bumper. Scoop Smoop

 

It is a matter of LOOKS (Sport) vs. TRACTION (Off Road).

If looks are more important than being able to go anywhere you want or need to, with ease, and no after market additions... and you actually like having a fake scoop in your field of vision, then SPORT TRD was made for you... and they sell a lot of them.

If having a truck that thinks it is a Jeep or a Tractor, and climbs amazing steep grades and climbs out of mud pits, right from the dealer showroom floor, then the OFF ROAD TRD 4WD is your puppy.

Toyota makes a truck for every personality or situation. 4WD is double the traction of 2WD. A rear locker greatly increases traction over 4WD alone. A-TRAC greatly increases traction over the rear locker as it controls the front tires as well as the rear.
