EZ Down tailgate system blows

Open and close the tailgate once and it chafed the cable covering.
A piece of excrement.
The wife will have to deal with the tailgate.

 

I think you are the second person to say this same thing....Sorry you didn't catch the last review...but good info to pass along to everyone else....

Maybe it doesn't work on an '09.I would think thetailgate is the same,though.

 

Huh...this would be cool if it worked right. I totally had no idea they made EZ down tailgate systems for this truck.

How does it get any easier... It weighs nothing

 

mine snapped my tailgate cable. It crimped the cable on the strut side and it became frayed. I had to replace the cable so i took out the ez down kit. IMHO it's not worth it!

 

My tailgate seems super easy to open and close already. I guess that since I am used to a full size F250 or Silverado tailgate, this just seems like a waste of time for me. Thanks for the review.

I thought it was just me but agree, the strut rubs the cable to the point where it won't close unless you carefully fold the cable in while closing the tailgate.

Wouldn't recommend it, although I could take that cable off I guess.

 

if you take off the cable, you will put to much stress on the strut. And the tailgate will not be even, so if you sit or step on the tailgate it might bend.

Can two struts be mounted, one on each side, without making custom brackets? It'll be expensive, but should allow the cables to be removed.

 

I doubt the struts are strong enough to support the load the tailgate is designed to hold.

 

The TyRap Mod works perfect to fix this. You need a very good 3/16 TyRap hopefully the black ones and with that you can put it around the shock in such a way the the head of the TyRap will catch the cable and prevent it from going beside the shock. Works great really.

I actually was going to try this, came here instead, read somebody else's account of this fix, installed it and works perfect now. You need to get the TyRap on super tight with diagonal cutters as a pry before you trim it.

If it gets wet it still might move around a bit so next step is LockTight Super Glue it so it can't move wet or dry.

 

i agree, it takes next to no effort to open and close. i wouldnt waste my time or $ on it.

 

The problem is not too much effort it's too little effort. You click the tailgate handle and it drops unexpectedly like a damn rock. The caught me off guard the first few times I opened it.

That's why I put it on, not so much for me as others. Learn from my mistake kind of idea.

My GM never did that cause it had brackets that had to unfold and that unfolding sort of slowed it down a bit. The cables on the Toyota's offer zero resistance.
