I was wondering if anyone has tried to do a 4.7L swap in the taco. I would assume that it would work since the 4 runner uses it. Or better yet, has anyone swapped the V8 into an FJ? I would assume this would be a cheaper engine swap than trying to swap in a diesel into the taco. Any thoughts?

I want to say there is already a couple threads on this. Try searching. I would love a V8 in my truck also.

There are quite a few threads on this.

It has been done at, I would imagine, great expense. Toyota even did it for a SEMA truck.

Supercharge the 4.0 and you'll get better hp and tq results than the 4.7.

    -4.0 V6 Supercharged: 304 HP and 334 lb/ft of torque
    -(2006) 4.7 V8: 271 horsepower; 313 ft/lb torque

Unless of course you crave the sound of a V8.

+1 It will be cheaper and the sound of the supercharger isn't bad either.

Don't do an engine swap on a 2011. You'll kill your resale value. Nobody wants to buy a nearly new truck that some hobbyist with questionable skillz has shoehorned a different, bigger, older engine into, just so he can indulge his heavy right foot.

If you must have more power - do the TRD supercharger.

Supercharger is definitely the cheaper/easier way. Those numbers for the 4.0L Supercharged are off the box but in reality I think they are similar to the 4.7 V8 from what I have read. Granted the 4.7L data could be less in actuality too. Definitely a improvement from stock though.

I wish I could do a V8 swap in my tacoma but after thinking it, doesn't increase towing capacity,(unless all your looking for is power or just have money to blow) I would just supercharge it or get a tundra.

Nah, a V8 would never fit, lol. Sounds like crap too, and pretty slow.

However I would venture to say the resale has not been affected in a negative way.

A swap can add value if done correctly, not everyone is a hobbyist with questionable skills like your trying to say...

    On a sufficiently old truck - I don't disagree. Not on a 2011.

You could be a professional mechanic and done everything 100% by the book. I don't know you so from my eyes, it was shoehorned in by a hobbiest and, unless I went through it with a fine tooth comb, I wouldn't buy it.

I don't think BJMoose was trying to knock anyone's skills, but on a new truck resale will take a hit unless you find a specific type of buyer who knows what your skills are personally.

Right. Sorry. My point is, as Pugga said, the *potential buyer* has no way of knowing how skilled the mechanic was who performed the job.

As a professional shover of LSx motors into places Mazda never intended (I've done 3 v8Rx7 swaps) this thread has too much negativity.

Dude more power to you. Stick the 4.7 in there. It will no doubt be just as complicated as a diesel swap (including a new custom cross member), but the potential of the 4.7 is higher then the 4.0. There is no replacement for displacement. Because you can always add forced induction on top of a 4.7. Not to mention, you'll likely be one of the first besides toyota proper to do the swap. If I had the funds and spare time I'd do it on my 2010.

I wasn't planning on doing it but the thought had me curious. My thoughts behind this was if a v6 4 runner tows 5000 and a v8 tows 6500 then maybe i could get another 1500#'s of towing capacity, great v8 sound, good power while still only having to run 87 octane, and potentially get better fuel mileage since the bigger engine would have to work less to get the same weight to move ( not towing but every day driving situations). The v8 would piss away the 8 yr 125000 mile bumper to bumper warranty I got with the truck ( I work @ a dealership and it would've been stupid to not get it-$749). The trd supercharger kit however will be covered for the whole time since it is a factory accessory. Sounds like it's time to start saving for the supercharger kit with a nice blow off valve for good measure. A v8 taco would be badass though.:D

I'm well aware of this but what is the justification as to why the 4 runner has the higher towing capacity with the v8 when everything else is the same. same brakes on both, weight within a few hundred pounds, rear end ratios might be a little different but that wouldn't warrant that big of a difference in capacities. Same thing with a bmw x5. 6 cylinder capacity=5000 lbs, v8=7700lbs. everything is identical on those too. just curious.

that would make sense. I just figured the taco and the runner were on the same platform but it's probably more like the taco and the FJ are on the same. Thanks for the insight.

who knows. I think that if I were to pull a 25' boat that weighs in @ 6000#'s on a trailer with trailer brakes I'd be fine with either a stock 6 cyl or a little better w/ the trd s/c kit.

not to mention if done correctly a v8 would increase MPG if geared correctly... but that really doesnt outweigh the cost of the swap lol.
