I tried and tried to get the tool for removing the damn spare from under the cab and frankly its annoying and I cannot find anything... its 40+ pounds of dead weight im carrying under the cab and plan on getting a tire carier for the bed... I lost the tool for getting it out... where do I buy it?

I'm sure you can drop the spare tire without the special tool, try a pair of locking vice grips and a flat screwdriver. You can always borrow the tool from a fellow Tacoma owner too!

If you crawl under the truck you can get to the release mechanism and use a screwdriver to let it down. Just make sure to push it to the side when it comes down so it doesn't fall on you!

Hmmmmmmmm. Unless the 1st gens are different, there is only one disc on mine that you can slide a screwdriver into from under the truck.

I was wondering the same thing.

From what I gather all it does is free up that space under the bed giving you more clearance there.
