Being a dad myself (with an 09 TRD Sport) I would ask my boy what kind of mods would he want to do. If he said, "dad, I want to put Toytec coilovers on it with some Moto Metal wheels and 285-70-17s" I would say sure, but you have to pay for them. And, learn how to install them (I was an auto mechanic before becoming an engineer). Kids these days (with the exception of some here and other car/truck forums) do not which end of a screw driver to use. He would also appreciate the time and money spent, even if he did not pay for the truck, there is personal cash invested.

To make a long story short, it may help bring father and son together in a way that wasn't there before. If dad is not mechanically inclined, it might make it fun figuring it out, but have a mechanic check it after it is done. Start with easy bolt on stuff, TRD intake, maybe an exhaust... This won't do any damage or hurt anyone of done wrong.

    Just my 2 cents...

Yeah my dad said when I first got my truck that If he liked what I was going to put on it (like new rubber) that he would pay for it or for half of it.

Anything I would have to pay for. And don't worry I plan to put everything on myself. Im the mechanic of my family:D

Okay...I've read this excuse too many times to be quiet any more....Yes...He was GIVEN then truck...and then his dad set some boundaries...and here he is on the internet complaining that his dad won't let him mod this free truck...That is a prime example of looking a gift horse in the mouth.

The other thing I can't help but think- Exactly how much driving experience does lent have?? Does he really need a bigger, faster, stronger, nearly new truck as a beginner driver??

There are LOTS of angles to come at this one...

I think that everyone who thinks he is spoiled should go with the "Nothing nice to say-Don't say anything at all" at this point...cause it's all been said. Everyone who tihnks Lent is right....We understand that and disagree.

For everyone everyone-saying the same things over and over again isn't going to change anytihng.

For the OP-Keep your excitement...Get used to driving and take care of the truck....Work it out with your dad-cause no matter how many posts there are here about it...Nothing is going to get done to the truck if you don't work with him.

I hope I don't get bashed for saying this, but I got my first Tacoma when I was 14. I think it was an 04. I worked for my dad after school and such. Anyways....

Yo bro, your dad will probably give in over time. Many people have already said this so I'm sure you get it. :) It maybe the fact that he doesn't want you to mess it up. ? Thats why my mom says I can't get another dirt bike. Cause I'll just wreck it again. :p

Just be patient. I know its hard some times, but its a good quality ( does that sound right?) to have.

True. And like I said earlier, is it worth damaging the relationship with your father just to do a few mods?

I'd be willing to bet that, once you start driving and get that truck on the road, he will soften over time and maybe even work on the truck with you. Just be patient and give it some time. You're at Step One: getting your license and you're worried about Step Four or Five. There's plenty of time for modding, just ease up and get along with dad. Pick your battles wisely.

LOL, dude above me just posted almost the same thing.

Believe it or not I have had alot of driving experience. My parents have always let me drive them on trips and around town. Im a good safe driver according to my parents.

I'm going to get a chance to talk to my dad about this soon. I want to figure out why I cant and why he wont let me.

I was just a little Lents venting moment the other night. :)

^Ah, there's nothing wrong with that. If not to vent, what the hell else is the internet good for, right?

I spent a good 30 mins last night modding my Buddies early 90s (I think) Sentra's trunk with a bungee cord so that it would stay shut while we where driving around last night. Be glad you have what you have.

I've had my truck and license for over two years now and my only mods are the CB and tires. I'm glad its taking this long. Instead of spending all my cash on mods I wouldn't really use I'm taking a far more practical approach to mods. What do I need for my truck rather than want.

I dig it...but there are a few folks who obviously can't let it go....and it's now officially useless to keep talking about it...

I hope everyone can just leave it alone now...

I wish the beating a dead horse smiley from my bike forum was here....
