Twisted CV Boot

Changed my oil yesterday and found this.

 

Hmmmmmm... Now that's a new one. My first guess would be to try and gently unwrap the thing, maybe loosen the clamp and work it back to its original shape.

 

Looks like the CV is disjointed to me, cut that clamp off CAREFULLY and put a new one on there after you straighten the boot out.

 

Somebody just posted a similar picture of that happening to their 1st gen. Try searching for that... I know he got a lot of responses.

 

The axle looks crooked in the CV Joint. Something looks broken. A CV Boot wouldn't be able to do that on its own.

took the clamp off and re positioned the boot and a new clamp...looks much better.

 

Do much wheeling? Lol. The outer CV joint is a pressed together piece...the only scenario I can think of where the boot would twist and the axle not break is if you had a loose boot clamp to begin with and it got caught on something (they do not come loose from the factory). It might look better with the boot rotated, but the outer CV joint is most likely broken. I would order a remanufactured axle from Amazon or RockAuto...not only would 4wd be mostly useless if it's broken, but if you keep driving it and the axle tears apart it could take out your shock, and the entire front driver side of the truck is held up by that shock...

 

Engage 4wd, tell us what sound you hear, hahahaha

 

Something is not right...

It looks like there's grease coming out of the larger end of the boot.
