    If there is no material on the inside of the can, for the oil to collect on, does it still do its job? Or are we just giving the oily vapors a "hoop" to jump through before going back to where they are not wanted.

    Some of the more high end ones I have looked at have a "media" inside. And some one mentioned scotch brite.

    Basically I'm asking is it a waste of time and money not to have something on the inside?

    Oil vapor given some time will condense back into an oil solution. When the oil vapor is traveling through the hose it is traveling somewhat fast. When the vapor fits the catch can, the vapor slows down. When you give it a place to coalesce it will attempt to move from a gas state to a liquid state.

    I personally do not like the catch cans with media. However, your observation is correct. The unit will work better with media inside. By having more surface area for the oil vapor to coalesce it with do it better. The reason I do not like the media, is it may end up somewhere in the engine you do not want it.

    Exactly.

    It's all about velocity, just as a high velocity intake charge holds fuel in suspension (on carb and old TBI applications).

    A large enough catch can volume, the velocity slows to near-zilch.

    Excellent point. Scotchbrite pads do tend to deteriorate over time.
    I like the design of the "bling" can above that has a set of baffles made from perforated metal plate (similar to Homer's Satoshi material).
    A nearly perfect design would be a pair of those plates, containing a poly webbing material similar to the old crankcase breather filters... with the poly being changed every couple of oil changes to avoid deterioration.

    OK, so if I understand this right, the yellow arrow shows the PCV line coming from the PCV valve that is tucked up underneath the S/C. Normally it goes right into the vacuum port that the orange arrow is pointing to, correct? Instead, you've just extended it to the catch can and ran it back up to the vacuum port. I'm really wanting to do this mod, but don't want to screw it up and ruin my engine or S/C. It seems pretty simple to do and would really help keep the gunk out.

    I have been running a catch can since I got my truck. I empty mine every oil change, and the shit in there is very thick. I ran a "empty" tube down to the frame, and have a shut off valve inline with it. This can cost me about $35, and all of the fittings were the wrong size, and I had to replace all of them and re-drill and re-tap all the the holes, but I like the setup. I put it where most people relocate their horns to, I moved my horns down and kept them pointed forward.

    I also run one on my 1990 Miata, I got this one off eBay too, about $22, this one was a lot easier to install, the fittings were better and the tubing was the right size.

    I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
    lots of people with mustang cobra's use these. the ford quad cam 4.6 seem to have lots of problems "clogging" up. they would mound a inline fuel filter to help filter the vapors.

    Imagine if you didn't have the catch cans. All of that would be on your intake runners, valves, pistons/rings, and clogging up the cats...

    I ran oil catch can on my 2.5L turbo sentra and there was some nasty shit there! Now on 1GR there are two cylinder banks I looked closely and the vent from passanger side cylinder head has hose going to the intake and the driver side cylinder head has a hose going from the vent to the intake.

    From as I see it you could run two catch cans, one for each cylinder head or have one catch can. If there is one catch can there would have to be a "T" in each line connecting both cylinder heads...

    Am I correct or over thinking this?

    You are over thinking it friend. Just put the can between the line going from the driver side valve cover - intake manifold. :thumbsup:

    Well... But wont that only catch crap from one cylinder bank? Since the cylinder banks are not connected any other way?

    If you could explain it why only catch can between driver side cylinder bank and intake manifold would do the job that would be awesome!

    Not doubting you, just looking for explanation...

    You have doubted me. I will have to squash you now! Muwahahaha.

    No, seriously. They actually are connected. Through the timing cover. Each valve cover over hangs each head, and bolts onto the top of the timing cover. So the air brought into the passenger side valve cover, then circulates over to the driver side, where the point of suction is. Due to that side being attached to the upper plenum (upper intake manifold).

    Does that clear it up a bit?

    P.S. If you pull a valve cover, you can also see down into the upper oil pan. It is just a huge connected void under the valve covers.

    Excellent explanation, exactly what I was hoping for, that definitely cleared it all up...

    Would a catch can benefit my N/A 1GR? I only have intake, straight piped rear cats and 14" Magnaflow. I have 1000lbs or so in bed at all times plus I tow 2-3 times a week. I need this engine to last...

    Yes. It will help all of the 1GRs. Boosted or not. I prevents the oil from getting where it shouldn't, and fuggin stuff up over time. It will keep your emissions cleaner longer, and prevent all sorts of build ups from oil being burnt.

    You already know that stuff though. :thumbsup:
