Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Don't get me wrong, I love Jeeps too. But a slightly modified FJ40 or older Toyota 4Runner will really make a Jeep work to keep up off road! I am sure the new FJ Cruiser would really make a heck of a 4x4 with a 3" lift and 35" tires and give the Rubicon a run for it's money. Biggest advantage the Jeep would have is no top or doors which is my preference for 4 wheeling on a nice day. Thing about a Toyota is the running gear is better built and tougher out of the factory, period.

PS, this thread isn't gonna end well OP, grabbing some popcorn while the gettin' is good!

Funny that a lot of "armchair explorers" on this forum talk about how much better the Rubi is off road when they do not possess the nads or skills to take a Tacoma to its off road limits.......
Couple that with the Tacoma outshining the Jeep in every other statistic for dependability and practicality, the choice should be obvious.
    Tacoma !

Damn, that is the towing capacity of my 4 banger Tacoma. Those V6s in the Wranglers must really be a turd!

lol @ armchair wheeler, that's hilarious.

yeah, these debates are usually endless and result in nothing.

both sides have their pros and cons.

and why the Honda hate? Honda's are nice cars. Nobody claims the Ridgeline is supposed to be some offroad machine. It's a comfortable street cruiser with TONS of room inside, and some room in the bed if you need to throw some dirty stuff back there.

    I have a 2011 DCSB 4x4 offroad. 26K miles.
Wife has 2012 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon. 300 miles.

Time will tell as far as how they both hold up but she is happy and I am happy.

It all boils down to what you want and are willing deal with as far as pros and cons.

Does the Jeep have ATRAC? We should all know by now that's better than having full lockers.

I haven't seen the spelling bastardized like that before, but at least your usage is appropriate in this context...and I happen to agree.

The Ruby and the Tacoma are two toally different vehicles. One company has a very bad reputation for reliablility and quality that tends to precede every discussion about their products. The other is often revered for their outstanding reputation for quality and reliability.

That pretty much does it for me.

    P.S. It's anecdotal

I got some facts and a anecdote, first the facts. This is from Consumer Reports reliability survey. They don't judge reliability, they just report it. They get their data from only one place: people who owned the vehicle. If you have a problem with the results of either reliability survey then take it out on the owners who completed the survey.

    And the story:
I bought a '97 Wrangler Sahara for the wife. No Jeep has ever been driven more gently than hers. She loved it. Yet it was in the shop 9 times during the 10 months we owned it. Every problem was covered by the warrantee, but it was a major inconvenience to be down one vehicle so often. The final straw was when the fuel level sending unit broke, leaving her stranded on the side of the highway with no gas in the tank but 1/4 on the gauge. And this is where the only bright spot of our Jeep experience came about: the local "Jeep Thing" club of Saint Louis drove by and pulled over. They were all over that thing trying to figure out what was wrong, trying to fix it and waited with her until the tow truck arrived. We went to their next meeting for dinner and had a really good time; I really liked them and thought they were a great bunch of people that helped my wife when I wasn't there. But those folks can't be counted on to be there all the time...and a Jeep can't be counted on period. I admit I hold a serious grudge against Jeeps, but for damn good reason. A 10 month old vehicle that leaves my wife on the side of the road is unacceptable. Your opinion may vary.

wow alot of hating on here!

    So heres my two cents,

    i owned a 2007 taco 6 speed 3" lift
33" tires put 70000 miles on it in that time
i had two throw out bearings go out on me...
    cv joint relaced
decided to sell it because it was unreliable and my service from the dealer sucked and buy a

    2012 JK four door sport
    4" lift (superlift)
    life time warranty!
    35" goodyear kelvar tires
    4.88 gears
    full skid plates diff covers
    cold air intake
    viair onboard constant air
    front sway bar disconnects
way to much else to list
    totally pimped out
13000 miles two full transmission replacements
blew four shocks ( jumped three foot off the ground you could hear them pop when i landed)
    bent tie rod bar
    3 blown steering stabilizers
bought it for the life time warranty and
i am not a air chair wheeler, so i wanted a rock crawler
that would make all my friends want to buy a jeep ( which it did that jeep would crawl over stuff most others on the trail would only look at)

as you can see though it couldnt with stand the abuse and the warranty didnt include rental it spent more time in the garage than on the trail. i spent alot of time getting rides from my girlfriend, ( a very reliable 2012 subaru impreza)

so i decided to sell it less than a year later and buy my current taco 2012 double cab, about to get my first free service i have 4000 miles on it so far so good keeping my fingers crossed.

so as you can see ive had alot of trouble with both so i think its a matter of getting a GOOD vehicle i think every company sells LEMONS.
i hope what ever you decide you get a great ride..

    and thats my two cents
    true accounts not opinions!

Had an 04 Ruby... damn good vehicle - and a blast to drive. Sold it for damn near what I bought it for... went everywhere in a virtually stock vehicle - just added armor - now as far as resale... wranglers have tacomas beat, do the research before you comment - I'd also buy a TJ ruby if I find one that has not been modified. Not into modified/lifted jeeps... it's not necessary on a swb jeep for my purposes, armor only.

My issue with the Honda is it being front wheel drive. I don't think a truck should ever be front drive, and I also wonder what would happen if there was the bulk of the weight near the very back. Add in a slippery surface, or something else to break traction, and suddenly you've got a very squirrelly ride. Best cars I've had were Hondas, and the Ridgeline would have been a consideration were it rear-wheel drive. Instead, I consider it a really big Japanese version of the Rampage.

Is it just me, or does the used car prediction seem a little out of whack? Especially the '11 Tacoma when everything is listed as Excellent.

Back then (2001), those round headlights were too expensive and the CJ's were rust buckets!

The 4.0 was a tank and the torque it had was unmatched. I could be on an extreme hill climb/rocks, let my foot off the clutch slowly without any gas and the thing would start pulling...

I had a 96 3.4 couldn't hold itself in place. You'd roll backwards without putting on the gas!

They both have their pros & cons -and it all depends on what you're using 'em for. I could see myself owning another wrangler in the future as a weekend toy. Heck yeah!!
