Morris, you sound like a really together guy (college and working the in the mines) that is making a good decision; the truck you will know will serve you the best and the financial terms that work best for you. Wishing you the best, show your truck off to us when you get it. Too bad your thread has been taken straight to hell.

OP have you tried looking at CarMax? I got my truck there and saved about $7k from sticker price and was a year and a half old at the time. It was priced below book value with 26k miles. Just some of my experience to help you out, good luck.

Full time job and full time student. Given how busy you are right now why put the added pressure of $400-$500 dollar payments on your plate right now? Finish up school and as a gift to yourself buy the Baja. What do all your buddies brand new trucks look like on the inside and out? I would imagine tough to keep them in good shape... Buy a beater for the "mine ride" and the Baja for everything else. Easier said than done... I speak from experience. So if your like I was...enjoy your brand new Baja!

This was my rationale back in 1999. I bought exactly what I wanted because I planned on keeping it for a long long time. 1999 TRD, v6, 4x4, auto, extended cab, sr5. I looked at the limited, but determined that paying the extra few thousand for seats, fabric, and electric side mirrors wasn't worth it.

I now have the same truck with 234,000 miles on it. Just put the Shrockworks front bumper and full OME suspension on it. Over the years, I have made sure to fix everything and anything that needed done (from scheduled maintenance to center console lids). I still love it as much today as the day I bought it.

My only regret now is not going the distance and getting the same truck in a limited edition. They are so rare....

My advice to OP.... GO FOR IT! You only live once, and you can't take it with you. Money is only a tool to get the finer things in life. If you are planning on keeping it a long time, get the Baja loaded to the gills. You will be happy for a very long time, and you will have a very special rig.

I say grab one. In 10 years the tx baja will probly be a pretty rare truck, and in 20, probly a collectors item. But on the other hand, if you buy an 06 or 07, you could save about 10k and PUT it towards LT or SAS and be the envy of (almost) every tacoma owner. Personally i would go the 2nd route, but im not you. Its totally your choice. I would almost buy one just for the badass graphics package and go buy a lift for it immediately.

I don't know how it is out there, but down here, $36,000 will get you into a nicely loaded new Tundra. As much as I love the Tacoma, I can't see laying out that kinda cash for one. I agree, you should go for what you want, but if it were me, and I was ok spending that much on a truck, I'd be thinking Tundra, or basic TRD Tacoma and lot's of mods.

For some, the size and fuel economy of the Tundra make the Tacoma much more appealing.

If when I bought my truck I could have got a Tundra with all the same options at the exact same price, I still would have gone Tacoma. Unless you need a larger truck, the Tundra isn't necessarily an upgrade IMO.

(Not trying to argue your point, just my 2¢)

That's exactly why I didn't get a tundra...I just didn't need the size. The Tacoma was perfect for what I wanted

Glad to see the OP got this truck...

but the "collector" angle is a stretch.

very few vehicles, even fewer trucks...become collectible after 20 years.

yes, there will be a demand for the truck in 10-20 years if it's in good condition...but all Tacoma trucks share this feature.
