6.5" subwoofer in the doors

has anyone ran 6.5" subwoofers in the rear doors on a double cab?
for instance, these subwoofers http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2060CVT654/Kicker-10CVT654.html?tp=111#overview-tab

with multiple layers of sound deadening, and sealing off any major openings, would the door be a suitable enclosure for something like this?

Main reason for this is i use the area behind the back seats for storage so i do not want to loose that space.

Anyone know if a 3" mounting depth will fit in the double cab rear doors?

These are listed as a free air sub so putting them in a non sealed door will work but they will just not hit as hard.

I am not in need of a big thump anymore since I am getting older and would like to keep rear seat storage as well.

 

Good idea. I have an access cab, does anyone know if they would fit in the rear doors of an access cab? My truck does not have any speakers in the rear doors I would love to put some in if they would fit. There isnt much room in the back of an access cab so I dont want to build a box for a sub hell I wouldnt have any room then if I could put some speakers like this in the doors that would be just tits!!!

 

If you use a spacer from ********* (Or make one) I think you could fit a 6.5 sub in the rear door.

 

the only fitment issue i would see would be from the excursion of the woofer hitting the door panel, (that is if it fits depth wise) i am just curious if anyone has ran a setup like this

 

Even if it fits, how would the sound quality be? I'm not an expert at all but that doesn't seem like the beat enclosure for a sub

 

probably sound like crap, and im no expert but i think youll need a sub that can run IB

 

If you tune it right, it will sound great. Most audio setups for sound staging don't use rear speakers, a lot of people use small subs to help fill in some of the bass between the subs and door speakers if they do have a set of rear speakers.

As for fitment, I doubt the sub would hit the door panel during excursion. It will be a close fit but I think it would work.

 

well i found the same subs for 65 each so i may give it a shot in a couple months.
since they can run off a low RMS power, would a basic 4 channel amp work for these (Channels 1 & 2 for the front speakers and 3 & 4 for the 6.5 subs)

 

I thought forum member, ItalynStylion, tried doing this. He ordered some 6.5 subs, fabricated some sub mounts for the front doors, hooked up everything correctly and just couldn't make it sound right, like too muddy.

There was too much rattle, or not enough seal withing the door to make a door mounted sub sound clean. Something like that...

 

I've currently got a similar setup like this and Bishop or Italyn is right. One thing im trying now is to put dampening sheets on the interior of the doors outer skin which i didnt do initially. Not sure what level sound quality level u prefer. I just have pioneer 6.5 component speakers driven by a sony receiver with the rear bass enhancer circuitry which basically acts as preamp LPF in the HU and
pioneer 6x9 coaxials in the front. It actually thumps fairly well, but it is sort of muddy due to the flex of the door just using 17 watts rms my sony is putting out. Dont think you'll have a problem with depth if using the ref spacers mine are mounted on 1" mdf. I'll let u know if dampening the outer skin helps as i just ordered it last night.

couldn't you use spray expanding foam in the speaker hole in the rear door then cut out the correct airspace

 

Not unless you want your door to look like the Michelin Man.


I've tried the subwoofer idea in the doors with some of those Tang Band 6.5" Neo Subs. The doors aren't sufficiently bolstered in my opinion for that type of movement. I think you could reinforce the door a bit and it will help some. I know for a fact that the Tang Bands fit but I don't know about the kickers. Also, I doubt you'll have a problem with excursion hitting the door. There's a ton of space in there.

My take on the whole thing is that you aren't going to like what they do. I think I have a thread on this somewhere....

 

since you have been this route already, what is your input/thought on the way to achieve a more full sound stage without taking up the storage behind the rear seats.
