I just bought a Tacoma (first truck) and do not want my tailgate stolen! In addition, I have a canopy on the way and also want to be able to lock it shut. I did the quick fix with a hose clamp for now, but want to lock it. I have seen the options with Pop and Lock and Dynolock. I like the Pop and Lock except the reviews on Amazon say they are plastic and look cheap. They have a more expensive metallic finish option, but it sounds like it is still plastic. Should I be concerned with the plastic? I suppose my only option would be to go with an internal keyless option, which sounds like uses the original handle, correct?
    Thanks!

Power tailgate lock is the way to go. No extra key to carry around and no worries about it seizing up on you.

I went with the pop n lock power lock. Locks and unlocks with the key fob or door lock controls.

Pop-N-Lock made some design changes to the PL5300 manual locking handle in 2010 that made it environmentally more robust. Bought mine in late 2010. The plastic appearance is similar to OEM but the tactile feel of the handle flap is worse. It works well enough after two winters. No seizures. The backup camera angle is slightly improved.

Except if there's a problem with the wiring, you won't be able to unlock it.

I guess it depends on where the wiring problem is. A 9 volt battery applied to the wires would be enough to lock/unlock the mechanism. Thats how I tested it.

Worse comes to worse, un-torx the tailgate panel. Probably break something inthe process though.

Unless you got a hard tonneau cover that's impervious to the coat hanger method.

If installed correctly, wiring problems are rare, though (on a Toyota anyway, VWs are another story...). When was the last time your power doorlock stopped working?

    Need help
I literally just got the Pop and Lock key version and color matched for the truck. I got the silver and I have to say relatively disappointed in paying more for the color match. I would really recommend staying with the black plastic version. They are not good at painting black plastic. If you really wanted to color match you could probably paint the black one your self with a better match. For the lock it's self it should keep away most of the smash and grab. As with most locks if someone really wants in they are getting in. I am assuming that the lock will either add to much time and they will move on or they will have to move the truck enough to set off the alarm. Just MHO....

    Good luck!
