Do the 2.4L , 2.7L 4-cyl 'wind out' on the highway?

    My Toyota is a 1988 pickup, 4WD, 5-spd manual, 2.4L 8-valve 116 HP

at 70 mph indicated (with 31" tires) tacho indicates 3,000 rpms which gets annoying cruising the highway.

How does the ubiquitous 2.4L 16 valve 142hp cruise? Can it climb some freeway grades or like mine, won't do over 50 mph (pedal to floor) on some grades?

How about the 2.7L used in the prerunners, how's that?

    thanks ahead.

(can you tell I'm getting ready to unload my pickup this year?)

My PreRunner 2.7L hits 2,500 RPM at 75 MPH. Of course, it has quite a bit more range than the older 2.4L have. Also, that is with a 4.10 rear axle and large tires.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Is the 4.10 rear axle and tires stock size?

Sorry, just looked at your mods ... I'm guessing the rear axle is stock and the 265 tires come with the TRD package.

The rear axle (4.10) is stock with the 2.7L manual tranny PreRunners. The 265s were added on by me since the stock Dunlops weren't good tires at all.

Toyota hasn't offered a TRD 4 cylinder Tacoma since 2002. The highest package you can get is the SR5. However, there is now a suspension TSB that allows you to get TRD suspension on your 4 cylinder PreRunner (05+). That is what I have. ;)

I have a 2.7 with 265 70 16 tires (stock) whereas Mark's tires are a tad bit larger than stock. My engine speed at 70mph ground speed is right around 2500 rpm. Generally I have no problem maintaining highway speed on a grade unless it's pretty steep or there is much head wind. The 160hp 2.7 seems to have plenty of power. I still feel like I'd like a bit more power at highway speeds for passing, but at city speeds the power is more than sufficient and at highway speeds its ample. I have no regrets with the 2.7 (vice the 4.0 V6) and with the headers/catback I intend to get, I think I'll be completely satisfied with the power.
