I got duped into buying a Raleigh mojave 4.0. I guess that what happens when u dont do ur home work first lol. 2 yrs later the only origional part is the frame. Bike weighs 27 lbs. not bad when the frame is 8 lbs of that lol.

    ??

It's a specialized they are known for having longer top tubes even in male specific bikes. The big wheels makes it a 29er.

    Yeah.
Thanks, that place is a blast. Nothing really technical other than Schooner, which is nearly impossible at either end of it, hard to walk your bike without sliding down the hill. Mostly just a lot of fast, flowy trail designed for biking.

The guy in front of me has a Chris King that you might have heard, mine is a DT Swiss M1800 in need of servicing, it was getting loud. I did that when I got back and put the 36-tooth rings in it, sounds quieter and more like a King now.

I'll probably do Berryman again in the fall, or whenever we get a group together to go. Syllamo is pretty far, may save that for the spring before they do the race. I definitely want to check it out.

I think it's gonna be a good thing too. But, I worry about the precision it requires to work. Does that mean it'll be finicky (like XTR can be)? The cassettes are CNC cut which also means it's gonna be expensive.

Still, I'm anxious to see it first hand.

Definitly buy used. You aren't going to find anything "good" if you're going to be hitting anything above a walking trail. I'm not necessarily absolutely against department store bikes...I think they'll work fine for most newbies for a couple of months, and aren't sure if they really want to jump in head first. But even then, you're spending north of $500 (up here).

As for a good starter bike...buying used, it's tough to say. I've seen some great bikes for real cheap. But if a buddy were to come to me with the same statement, I'd say buy something from a company that sells high-end bikes (Trek, Kona, Specialized, etc...because if you say well-known, they'll show up on a Raleigh because everyone knows Raleigh), and make sure it's under 30lbs. Then I'd tell them to send me the ad before they plop down the bucks, just to make sure.

Haven't seen any of these on the forums yet...its a tank! But she will take a beating and ride home fine. 2008 and still rolling on the stock tires. I bought new and promptly broke my collarbone racing BMX the week after buying. So she had little ride time, then moved to Colorado where I got deployed. Then came home and had another shoulder surgery for torn biceps tendon / rotator cuff / torn labrum. But I am back in the saddle and looking to sell it in order to upgrade to a 2012 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR (if momma allows).

yeah im just gonna stick with walking trails for now. Im not planning on taking it off any jumps or anything too hardcore, yet.
I plan to upgrade the bike in the long term seeing as i know ill break parts.
I got more experience with bmx bikes.

Best thing to do is find something and post it. There are so many options, it'd be tough to give a recommendation. If you find something that has minimum Deore components (Shimano) or X5 (Sram), then you are probably doing okay. Anything less than that is pretty much an indicator the bike is off-limits for singletrack.

Also, be careful if you go on eBay. Anything that has "Not recommended for xxxx area" is usually an indicator it is stolen.

If your gonna up grade for a few hundred I'd save it and buy a decent hard tail. I sold all my bikes down hill, xc bikes, for a trek wahoo 29er the marlin is a little more but I like my wahoo. I don't get as crazy as I use to so its perfect for me. It was like $550.

    Yes, I sold my '13 Taco. :'(
Ditched most of the old drivetrain today except the shifter and the chain on my Nomad Carbon today. Went single ring! :D

    Old setup:

    -3x10 Shimano XT Deore crankset(running as a 2x10 + Gamut bash)
-Shimano XT Deore mid cage 10sp rear derailleur
    -Shimano XT front derailleur

    NEW setup

    -1x10 Shimano Saint crankset(M810-1) 73mm bb & 170mm crank arms
    -Renthal 32T 104 bcd chainring
-Shimano XTR mid cage 10sp rwar derailleur(M985)
    -E*Thirteen LG1+ ISCG05 chainguide

LOVE LOVE LOVEEE the new XTR derailleur with the Shadow+ chain stabilization lockout switch. Snappy and accurate shifting when I got it dialed in. Shifter takes a little more effort over the old XT Deore derailleur, but it just feels more solid. With the chainguide, this thing should not drop chains at all! Can't wait to hit the trail to test out the new goodies!

    Pics of the new setup:
