Today when I left school to go to lunch my tranny started slipping and I couldn't get any power to the drive train. (I have a 6 speed, so I thought I burnt up my clutch or something) We got it to the dealership and the service manage said that they saw this problem just last month. Said it was the pressure plate. They quoted me $1200+ for repairs worste case scenario. Me and my dad are going to do it ourselfves.

I was wondering if anybody had any advice on this and if it hasn't been done yet if I should photo-document it and post it up. (I didn't use search, sorry. But I haven't heard of this happening yet.) We are gonna start working on it here shortly.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let yall know what happens.

    Here it is right now.

Anyways I don't really know much about vehicles. So if I say something that doesn't make since, I'm sorry.

What does the dealership think happened? A broken spring in the pressure plate? Have you had any clutch issues before it broke like shuddering or slipping? That's odd for a fairly new clutch to give out if it hasn't been abused.

Has it been abused? Have you driven a clutch before this truck or was this your first manual? Gotta ask, have seen a lot of people posting up that have no clue how to drive a manual, not saying that's you so don't take offense please, just covering the bases like the old service manager I am.

Why the hell isn't this covered 100% under warranty? This is bullshit.....you need to confront them about this. I would tell the dealer that if it isn't fixed under warranty, I wouldn't see any reason to use them for anything else.

How is this not covered under the warranty????? The answer to "It's going to cost $1,200 to fix" should have been, "Sucks for you. I ain't payin' a penny."

I'm a bit confused as to why this isn't covered as a warranty issue.

A clutch is considered a wear item just like brakes. If the dealer determines that the failure is due to customer abuse then it would not be covered. If it is due to a mechanical defect, then it would be covered.

How many miles are on the truck?

60,000 powertrain warranty. If they saw it last week it sounds like a recurring problem and that means Toyota needs to pay for the repair job.

I've been driving a manual since I was 14, which was my first Tacoma. I don't think in my mind that I abused it. I've played around a little bit, but nothing too harsh.

Dealership thinks the springs in the pressure plate broke. My dad talked to them for quite a while, but they said since it wasn't the actual transmission, it's not covered. I don't really know the full details.

I don't know his mileage...but I know there are transmissions out there that have lasted 100K without any internals replaced...this is totally a warranty repair....I don't see how it could be otherwise.
Plus the dealer just quoted him a price- they didn't say "You've abused the transmission- so we won't cover it" Sounds like they are trying to dodge covering it.

Well that is how it worked when I was a Mazda/Subaru/VW Service Manager, had to deal with more than one customer who burned up a clutch and had it turned down for warranty coverage. Not saying that is the case here, just sharing my experience from my dealership days.

If it's really broken pressure plate springs and when they tear into it they don't find signs of abuse then it should be covered. However if the clutch disc is burnt and the flywheel is blued and has hot spots, then I'm betting it will be rejected for coverage.

I don't know what that dealer is smoking. Transmission isn't the only thing covered by the warranty. If my cig lighter doesn't work w/in 3yrs, 36k miles, they're replacing it.

That's not wear and tear... that's BROKE! I'm getting pissed at this dealer for you!

I've only got 17,156 miles. The dealer just said it wasn't covered. I'm not a hot headed person I didn't get fired up. Just remained calm and listened to what they said. :/ I guess that got the best of me this time.

Also, they said once we get it apart, if it is something else then just bring it in and see if they could warranty it.

I'd pull out your paperwork and look thru it...Call Toyota Corporate if need be...but I'd be amazed that it wasn't covered...
