Definity Dakota A/T at Pep Boys

They've got the buy 3 get 1 free deal going on, so I thought I'd stop by to check it out. I'm looking at 265/70/17 to go on the stock 17 inch sport wheels.

They aren't the most attractive looking tires, but with the 4 for 3 deal they become a little more attractive. Just in case anybody is considering them, here's how the quote looks:

Mounting: $0.00 x 4 = $0.00
Tire Handling: $1.50 x 4 = $6.00
Balance: $12.99 x 4 = 51.96
Road Hazard: $12.49 x 4 = $49.96
TPMS Kit: $6.99 x 4 = $27.96
1 Yr Computerized Alignment: $99.99 x 1 = $99.99
Tires: $114.99 x 4 = $459.96
La. State Fee: $2.00 x 4 = $8.00
Tax: $62.61

Total: $766.44 minus $114.99 mail-in rebate = $651.45

A decent price, but I was also quoted $770 OTD for some Nitto Terra Grapplers. Not sure saving $126 is worth the downgrade in tires.

 

Havent heard much about the dakotas but shouldnt be that bad!

i dont own a tacoma but ive had the definity dakotas on my durango for four years (55000 miles). i could of gotten about another 10000 miles out of them if my wife wouldnt of hit a curb but next weekend im going to go get another set. i checked around and there still the cheapest even though i bought them for 90 a piece 4 years ago

 

I have the MTs on mine in 285/75R16. They've been holding up pretty well. I have about 20K on them now.

 

the mt's on evil monkeys look beefy as hell in person, don't know if i buy the at's though, go for the terra grapler. that's my .002

 

I just got some of the mts the other day they are like $10 dollars more per tire but they have a much more agressive look

 

I just got a set, 265/75/16's. I liked that they had that size in LT load range C, 6 ply rating. A much tougher tire for those off-roading times.

For the 4 for 3 special, you have to get the road hazard, balance and TPMS kit or rubber valve stems.

I talked to the guy and he gave me me rubber valve stems 'cause I didn't want them touching my TPMS sensors. But the stupid Pep Boy computer system won't let them take the TPMS kits off: he had to give me a credit to get the price to the same as rubber stems.

If you don't need the alignment, don't get it.

Also, if you're taking your old tires make sure they take the disposal fees off.

Always be real careful at Pep Boys: their computer system is really bad and does stuff like adding charges or extra's I didn't want that even they don't expect.

I'm not so sure Dakota AT's are a downgrade, although Nitto certainly has better name recognition and cachet. I've had good luck with these tires in the past: the've balanced well, worn well and even and give good enough traction in the rough for me. Friends who've owned them have also found they perform well enough.

Mounted, on the truck, the tread block pattern looks an awful lot like BFG Radial All Terrains, although the shoulder support is not quite as beefy looking. The blocks have varying sizes, also like the BFG's, so highway noise is greatly reduced but still more than the passenger car tire (the crummy stock Dunlops) I took off.

I liked the siping and they really stick well in the rain for it. I do wish they had stone ejectors between the blocks though (not that I know how effective they are but I like the idea at least! LOL)

They're made by Cooper Tires, in the USA. If that matters.

 

I only paid 566 for my cooper s/t 's in 265/75/16

 

The Dakota AT's I got in same size, LT load range C's, will come to 505 once I get the rebate back.

My other short-list choices included the ST and the Discoverer ATR from a local tire shop. They had really good pricing but still about $60 more than PepBoys' with the rebate and no road hazard and flat repair was only covered at his shop.

Tire shopping isn't easy...hard to compare apples to apples for the best deal dollar-wise, there's to many variables. Also, Philly area prices for tires are high!

I'm on my second set. I got 45K miles out of the last set. Not bad for a mud tire.

For my 285/75R216 tires, they were $160 each. To get the Buy 3 get one free, you have to let them mount them, and buy the road hazzard warranty which adds about $120 to the cost.
It makes the cost around $600-$650 plus taxes.

The MT tires have a 40K mile warranty and you MUST rotate them at least every 5K or they'll wear poorly (probably typical of any MT tire).

They're main advantage is the warranty. I don't know of too many mud terrain tires that will give you a mileage guarantee. Plus the road hazzard warranty will replace a tire in the event of a puncture.

The tires themselves are made by Cooper. They're a 2-ply tire, but I've read the plys are pretty thick.

My tire is the largest size they offer for a 16" wheel and they don't make them in that size for 17" wheels (I don't know if they have any 17" tires for the MTs).
